All very true. In my mind, the 62 Max Wedge Mopars set the standard. What I'm saying is, the Sport Fury, or SS, got you buckets, console, nicer door panels and more chrome on the outside. The point thrown at me in the years I wrote for Mopar Muscle was that the GTO, no matter how you look at it, only came in a high performance package. The rest, Sport Fury, SS, Galaxie etal, were available with small engines. My present '63 Sport Fury was originally a 361 2bbl, my cousin had a 64 with a 318, another cousin had an Impala SS with a 283 duece. I owned a 65 Galaxie 500 XL with a 289 2bbl. You will never find a GTO with a 326 like the LeMans had. Thats where they get the upper hand. When it comes to the true definition of a muscle car, I think you have to look at the 68 Road Runner and Super Bee. I had a '69 Runner with a 440 4 speed, buckets, no console, vinyl floor, no power anything, a posi rearend and functional air grabber hood. They were built for go, at a low price. Now THAT's a muscle car !! Beep Beep.
