Jim, It could be humorous and interesting for each of us to post some of our dumbest mistakes. I have some that are still to embarrassing to post, but two come to mind right away that I'll admit to. Once was when I reworked the heads on my 64 Sport Fury 383. It would not start, no matter what. It took me 3 days to figure out I'd put the distributor in backwards. The second was a friend of mine and I were rebuilding an engine and when done, came up one lock washer short. We figured that one out as we cranked the engine to start it.
