Renault bought into American Motors around 1980.  They put up the money to 
tool and build the Renault Alliance/Encore models in Kenosha (based on the 
Renault 9, as sold in Europe).    In 1985-87 Renault put up the money to 
build the Renault Premier and a completely new plant in Bramalea, Ontario. 
They also supplied the cash for the 1983 Jeep Cherokee.

Chrysler bought AMC when Renault went shopping for a buyer for their 
interest in AMC.  By 1987 the Renault Alliance sales collapsed and the AMC 
brand was doing even worse.  So, Chrysler bought Renault's interest in AMC 
and then went after the remainder of the oustanding stock.   In the summer 
of 1987 American Motors Corporation became the Jeep-Eagle Division of 
Chrysler Corporation.  The Renault Premier was introduced as the 1988 Eagle 
Premier, and Chrysler built about 2,017 1988 AMC Eagles at the Brampton, 
Ontario plant (built by AMC in 1960).   When the last 1988 AMC Eagle rolled 
off the Brampton line in December, 1987, the AMC brand was laid to rest.

By the way, when Chrysler sold off its European operations in 1979-80, 
Peugeot purchased the British, French and Spanish car operations while 
Renault purchased the European Dodge truck operations.  Sometime in the late 
1980's (I suspect around 1987) Chrysler reaquired the rights to Dodge truck 
in Europe.
