Engine troubleshooting

My Poly is making a rather loud clicking noise that seems to be coming
from the lower end, but is a bit hard to pinpoint.

It gets faster as the engine revs and happens whether the transmission
is in park, neutral or in gear.

I've heard and fixed tappet noise before and this doesn't sound like that does.

I'm prepared to pull the motor and start looking for the root cause
but thought I would post this and see if anyone has any words of
wisdom.

As always, you folks are the best and I am thankful for any help I receive.
