washer bottles

my 63 dodge has the plastic bottle. it was plumbed up to the foot switch 
near the brake pedal. when i bought the car it never worked. 10 years ago i 
pulled it all apart to do up the engine bay & didnt replumb it. now i want 
to get it going & cant remember how it was hooked up.  is the foot switch a 
pump that you manualy pump to squirt the water? does it have a vacum hose 
attached to it? is it even compatable with the plastic bottle or should i 
hook an electric pump to it? any help greatly appreciated, thanks richard
