Indeed, it's said so-called paint jobs should really be called "sand & prep jobs" because almost all the work is needed before you fire up the paint gun.

Getting used to gravity paint guns must be like getting used to tofu: once you get the knack all is ok. :) My buddy who has been using spray equipment in furniture refinishing for many years has the same viewpoint as Ollie so far. Can't get the knack of gravity fed guns. (Not sure of his position on tofu....) 

Another consideration, besides pollution issues, is the price of paint being what it is: the less overspray the less waste of expensive paint.  
 
Speaking of paint, another guy I know uses Ace Hardware's Rust Stop Oil-Based Enamel. Something like $25 a gallon a while ago (probably more now) and mixable in any color. He says it looks okay to him and his car is not driven much anyway, so possible sun fading and no hardener does not bother him. He says touch up is easy too. 

Another dude I know took another tactic: rat rod. He paints the car black primer and if it gets scratched he juts adds more black primer. :)
