Re: Oil leaking from exhaust bolt

water or coolant in the oil might show up as a white milky substance on the dip stick.

I've drained both - easier to see oil in the coolant - oil was recently changed ( mobil one ) but seems really black for being relatively new ( 200 miles or so )

Should I pull the heads to see if the head gaskets are okay?

Brian,

Check the radiator, oil in the coolant = bad. Check the dipstick, water
in the oil = bad. That's the other side of this hobby, some bad. But
you'll find the problem, deal with and get back on track.

So is any amount of oil in my coolant a really bad thing? The more I
get into this the more depressed I'm becoming ...

Brian,

You'll become friends with those 3 bolts just because you'll be spending so much time with them. When I first put the headers on I learned that the studs could no longer be used. My pit crew modified both an open end and a box wrench, ala- grinding wheel, heat, vise, to allow more than a quarter turn of the bolt. We took turns as the blood does drain from the arm quickly. On the right side we loosened the motor mount and jacked the motor up a few inches which gave us a little more room to scrape our
knuckles. Rich K. knows the drill.

I haven't examined the coolant yet - but I've noticed when I empty my
catch can back into the radiator, the first bit of fluid that comes
out is dark and then the green stuff flows.

TTI sends bolts - at least that's what they sent me - I bought one of the first header sets for the poly when they came out a few years ago.

I used the drain plug on the passenger side of the block to drain the
rest of the block.

Should I be using studs? Would that make getting them on and off
easier? There are 3 that are pretty much impossible ...

did you see any oil in the coolant that you drained out?
just trying to be optimistic here,
I'm thinking maybe the header bolt or stud was leaking a
little coolant and mixing with dirt and oil on the outside of the
engine?
in which case, just put some thread sealer on it and reinstall.

all the lower exhaust bolts are actually studs (in stock form) that
screw=
 down into the
water jackets. not sure what type of fasteners TTI gives you for the
lowe=
r ones?

plus you'll still have some coolant in the block so have a pan handy.
