Hi John, Good Question.The engine had a spun #6 Rod bearing, so for certain the crank will be turned on the rods. Mains looked good. Cam had a line in the front journal, so will replace cam.
the #5 and #6 Cylindars have very slight groove in them. I'm going to see if the machinist can hone them out and still be within spec to keep the original pistons. If I have to bore it, at that point, its a matter of what 10.5:1 pistons that I can find for the 273. I know Egge makes a .030 over. But havent seen any .010's, which is ALL it would need to be bored if it needed it. Flatlander will custom make the piston's for me, but I have a feeling those will be more than the Egge's
The Dart has < 90K and is a survivor Engine < 80K survivor. The engine has been open once before, as the pistons have numbers awl'd into the back of them. Bearings are original size, but Clevite 77's. Cam was a Melling, so it wasnt original. When the engine started to holler and slight knock, I took it out, so as not to damage much.
So, if possible, Keep original pistons, of course original heads, original rods, etc. Replace Bearings and Rings and cam/Lifters and chain/gears/pump. Will go with Clevite Bearings, Moly Rings, and racer Brown Cam. (ST-1 or ST-2) . I havent measured the push-rods yet, not sure if I will replace them or not. They're solid, un-bent, just need to check for wear is all.
By all means of the term, to me, Refresh is Rings & Bearings, & Timing Gear, minimal head work like guides. Rebuild is where you get to the pistons, major head work, Sleeves and the like.
