RE: milling heads

Ed,
Okay. Without having a set of 452's in front of me I recall they
are open chamber. Since they were used on 440's I'll use 4.32" as the
diameter of the chamber (you can re-run the math by substituting the correct
diameter in the formula).

The formula I'll use to calculate the volume (there are others) is
Bore X Bore X .7854 X Height. So...

	4.32 X 4.32 = 18.6624 square inches.

This would calculate the area of a square, so to figure the area of
the circle inscribed within the square, we multiply by .7854 to give us the
area of this flat "cylinder".

	18.6624 X .7854 = 14.6575 square inches

We want to calculate the volume of .010" of this cylinder, so...

	14.6575 x .010 = .146575 cubic inches. 1 cubic inch - 16.387 cubic
centimeters (cc) so if we multiply that out...

	.146575 cu in x 16.387 = 2.4 cubic centimeters.

So for every .010" you mill a head with a chamber diameter of 4.32",
you decrease the volume of the chamber by 2.4 cc. To decrease the volume 4cc
you would remove 2.4 X 1.666 (to infinity).

So to verify our calculations we'll plug the numbers into the
formula above:

	4.32 X 4.32 X .7854 X .0166666 = .2442898 cubic inches x 16.387 =
4.003 cc

So to reduce your chamber volume by 4cc, you would remove
approximately .016" from the head surface. This works until you get into
the radius or completely remove the open quench area then some additional
figuring is required.

BTW, if you remove .016" from the head surface, don't forget to
remove 1.6 (1.6 being the number of .010" units we've removed from the head
surface) X the .0123" number from the intake surface, or .01968" from the
intake surface.

I don't know about you guys but if they'd taught math this way in
high school, I might have actually gone to class!

Yes I am talking about the 452 heads .Metal gasket is about .019 felpro.039

Don't forget that the head gasket also will determine cc. Metal gasket
will make more compression. Felpro will lower compression. that will also
affect cc.
