Fuel filter location ?

On a 1963 Polara 500 with a 383 and a 4 barrel, where would the proper
location for the fuel filter be? The original two barrel had it in
between the fuel pump and carb up top above the valve covers, which is
where I kept it when I added the 4 barrel. A friend who's a good
mechanic and a drag racer from back in the day says it seems like a
bad spot and could get hot and percolate or vapor lock. I looked in
the service manual and parts book, and neither show a 383 4 barrel
combination. Where I have it is up above the valve cover about 3
inches away and about 6 inches from the exhaust manifold.

As always, thanks.
