Steve,

I used white vinegar on my axles back in May and it worked very well.  For the first day or so I wondered if it were true - seemed like nothing was happening.  But after a bit longer, it was foaming and they came out surprisingly clean.  It's a nice non-toxic alternative for rust removal.
