I have found that 5" is just about perfect as well...4.5bs is leaving a bit
on the table. Some Centerlines come in something like 4-7/8 which works
really well. On my '64 330 wagon; (which is sagging in the rear, but has
the torsion turned down to level it back out at a lower stance) I'm using a
Wheel Vintiques Cop Wheel, in 10" with 5" of backspace - the tires are
Cooper Cobras sized 295-50-15. Now these didn't just "fit right in there",
but the "massaging" required was less than you'd think. As long as you stay
away from the lowering blocks: air shocks and major butchery can be avoided.
It wasn't a cake walk by any means but I wasn't too concerned about the
judicious application of a BFH in this rescued from the crusher,
driver-caliber, eat-up-with-bad-ass ride. The wheels were ordered from
Summit on line. Here's a tip, go through the endless pages of a manufacturer
on the site until you find the part # for the wheel
style/backspacing/width/and bolt circle you want or need. Chances are good
(at least for WheelVintques), that the combination WILL have an exisiting
number. It won't save any time in recieving them, but since it's a listed
Summit # it's no longer a "special order" part that carries a bigger price
tag and a no return without a hassle clause. Sidewall bulge is where the
main interferences occur, on the outer side of the wheelhouse, so the
straighter the vertical sidewall the less clearance problems to overcome. I
think a BFG-TA would have probably saved me some work over the Coopers from
what I've learned thus far. The 8-3/4 I used was supposed to have to have
been from a '70 B-Body but I didn't measure it's width prior to install. I
just started mounting borrowed wheels and recording specs to hone in on what
would be the best overall fitment. Hope someone will find something useful
in my info....
