Re: Highway hi fi

I think they want the Hi-Way Hi-Fi for the same reason they want a factory radio, as opposed to hacking the dash, the instrument panel, and the door panels for aftermarket music radios and speakers.  There is something about re-creating the sounds as well as the look and ride (otherwise, why not pull the Poly and throw in a modern Chevy small-block, since they are so plentiful, newer, and many think more reliable).

If you want the feel of an old Mopar, the original sounds are part of the package (although a hidden plug for an ipod or disk-player if OK too).  The Hi-Way Hi-Fi is cool, interesting, and part of the era.

My best friend in high school had a GM-style one in his Impala, and it was way cool and played fine.

Now call me a cynic but why on earth would anybody want to put a record player in their car other than to say you have one.  People say "there's nothing like the sound of vinyl."  I say "Yeah, you're right.  There's no shittier sound ever invented."
If you like crackling and skipping, and the fact that you have to carry a pile of records with you to keep you entertained on a long drive, then go for it.  You can fit 120+ mp3 songs on a CD-R.  That's 60+ of those 45's, cuz if memory serves, there's two songs to a record.  And the price of a hi fi is outrageously stupid.  Especially when you can buy a new deck and a real good pair of 6x9s for significantly less than a crappy sounding record player.
Sorry for ranting but I use to be a musician (before the Parkinson's got me), and to me sound is everything.  If my favourite tune in the world could only be played on vinyl, I'd be looking for a new favourite tune.
