Re: zddp

i decided against the lucas....just to much info thats negative towards it...but i visited the valvoline site. Theres a lot of good talk about the 20-50 VR1 oil. Its got the zinc and phosphorus additives in it. I think ima try that...might drain it tomorrow...nothing else to do. And yes...its 4am...just getting off work...i was so bored i decided to continue this topic...I know its gotta be rubbing yall thin..my apologies!!

The last 2 years I put in half a bottle of the Lucas stuff each year with NAPA  [valvoline] 20w50.         I drive  about 3000 miles  a summer going to car shows.         This year I put in 20w50 valvoline race oil.          Nothing has gone crap yet.

Did some research on that Lucas stuff...you gotta do some math before you pour that stuff in. It's 40000ppm zddp for one time cam break in. So to have just for oil change and normal op you'd have to calculate how much to pour in with ur oil depending on how much zddp is already in the oil...and add just enough to hit 1200ppm total I guess

I guess that's why a lot of people run the thicker stuff. I just wanna make sure I make the right decision and Don't have premature engine failure due to the thick oil not getting where it needs to go fast enough...or nit getting where it needs to be...ima go ahead and order zddp plus...seems like a good product...

I haven’t seen any quality additives with ZDDP in them at the local parts chain stores; Lucas might have a product that will help but your best bet is to find/order the product with a proper amount of ZDDP...
You aren’t going to ruin your engine with any of the mult-vis oils you have listed...not an issue for procrastination and you will know when you try one.  Generally, a high mileage engine will require a thicker/heavier oil because of the increased clearances due to wear.

Jacob,

Correction; the Syntech 20-50 IS a full synthetic...I guess the e-mail went out before I could delete and re-write.

Anyhow, a full synthetic usually finds all the small/micro gaps in our gaskets...but that is with zero to 5W oils; this being a 20-50W should not pose a real problem but with your mileage you may want to run the ZDDP additives.  Do a cost analysis for the miles you drive and if they are low miles you may want to continue using your current oil with the ZDDP additives on the market and save the full synthetic oil for after a rebuild.

Jacob,

Syntech is not a full synthetic but a blend; not a problem with your engine.

From what I see castrol did it right with that 20-50 oil. A guy I work with
swore by pennzoil...well he removed his oil pan today in his 98 Durango
cause of a blown motor to find nothing but sludge...and that's with 3k oil
changes!!!! Def never using that stuff. I've always used castrol...I wanna
find a oil in the stores I just hate ordering stuff...shipping prices are
ridiculous and it takes forever. Ive just always been so worried about
switching to 20-50 especially a synthetic. It's never below freezing down
here...maybe one day in January MAYBE. idk...if someone wants to give an
honest opinion let me know...I wanna do what's best for that ol' gal! I'm
going on a roadtrip this weekend to see how she does. Only driving an HR
away but I wanna make sure I'm not gonna run into any problems..

Time for me to change oil in the '63 too.  Can't bring myself to run
castrol.  I know we've beaten this subject to death, but one more
time, is there an oil out there with the right additives? Or,
what/where do we find the additive.  Product name?
Thanx
