Yes the pick up tube just screws out, if your replacing it make sure it is the correct one for you pan, and it should be screwed in tight, if loose it will allow air to be sucked into pump instead of oil,,,,,,,,, I am guessing that the ridges you are feeling down below the ring travel area are from a varnish build up, not a depression in the metal
