Re: Scored Cylinders ?! bad or ok ?

Eric,Higher milage motors will show "wear" on the lower side of the cyl.The piston skirts tend to cause that wear pattern after alot of miles. If your car isn't using any oil and the upper part of the cylinders. look ok without any scoring,I wouldn't worry about it.

Subject: Scored Cylinders ?! bad or ok ?

Soooo... I have my 361 up on my Harbor Freight engine stand waiting
for it to colapse on me while I'm doing the rear main seal. I get
curious and peek into the cylinders from below. I notice a few of
them have one decent sized vertical score that you can definately feel
with your finger or nail. Some are about an inch long and half inch
across.

I only drove the car home about 50 miles when I bought it. I seem to
run fine and sounded ok. Then took engine out for upgrades.

The vertical scores are below what looks to be the really smooth area
that the rings create on the cylinder walls. The walls are nice and
shiney and none of the scores go up that high, they stop right at the
bottom of the shiney walls.

Engine had oil pressure on the after market gauge .. about 40psi.

So, is this ok? What is this from. .... perhaps a blocked oil
pickup tube ? my next post.
