Re: Acceleration A must READ!! Off subject, but intreseting

Doug is right on the money.  You feel those cars through your whole body - even up in the stands.  As a Mopar man I take great pride in knowing those fuel engines are still basically a 426 Hemi taken to the extreme.  I get a kick out of John Force claiming they are running Ford Boss 500 engines they developed.  On a tour of his shop in Brownsburg, one of his own people acknowledged that it's still really a Chrylser based engine.  Just look at it - no Ford I've ever seen has the distributor at 10 o'clock on the front of the block - that's Chrysler all the way.

"The exhaust headers when at full throttle, produce 1,500 lbs of down force on the car."
I saw this displayed a year or two ago when Jeff Deihl broke a header on his funny car and the thrust launched the car up into the air.  Wow.

Cool article - thanks.

I've seen all the things that can go wrong,, go wrong in person.  It's all impressive but for those that have never been, you can't explain the sound. It's more than that,, you feel it.  It comes from the ground,,, it vibrates your shirt against your chest, maybe takes your breath away the first time.  It seems unbelievable, untill you experience it.  Can't imagine what driving one is like.  And to think, it basically evolved from when Don Garlits proved the 392 Hemi could thump all comers.  Other manufactures tried, but when the 426 came along in '64, (list content) it was all over.  One thing I didn't read that the NHRA likes to hype is that those things come off the line at 100 mph!

Thanks. This makes a max wedge seem like a golf cart. LOL

That email summary is from a March, 2004 Automobile Magazine article by By David Davis, Jr. by the way.

The article notes that all items stated were fact checked as true but "the business about heat from dragster exhaust igniting the hydrogen in the atmosphere was probably hypothetical."

Also: ... from the days of front-engined dragsters...
"You know that you're in deep trouble in a dragster if you can suddenly see things clearly. That means the supercharger has been blown off the top of the engine and the raw nitro methane fuel has eaten through your visor."

Yikes.

http://www.rlengines.com/tech/Acceleration.pdf is the article online in .PDF form.

Thanks,
