Big block head- why and how

 On the intake side at the middle is the crossover heat port. around
that is a U shaped cavity that extends down inside the head and ends
there.  What is the purpose of that?? My intake gasket is the type
that blocks off the heat port hole. but part of the U cavity is still
showing.  It looks bad and would be a small bolt-screw trap.  In
addition to getting debris, oil  and water held in it.  Is that cavity
neccessary and if not, has anyone here blocked off or filled that
cavity?
 Today I finised assembly of the engine and now it is ready for
paint.  HOOO- HAAAW!! .....................MO
