Re: Re: Anyone use the SMS trim kits?

Yes and they wait can sure impact a person's timeline and all. It sounds in your case thay they sent you damaged goods so that raises a quality control question in my mind. Mixed dye lots and water damage are things that if their person inspected the fabric bolts they should have caught. SMS will also do embossing the others won't. Whatever one wants as I was told. That's great they'll do that. I searched for door panels for my 64 440 which do not have carpet on the lower portion. SMS was the only company who has them like that. Legendary doesn't have them for a 440 model that are factory correct. So we're locked in to some degree with SMS! Other wes sites have people who have had incorrect/defective fabric issues and asked anyone local to go there and inspect their order before it gets sent out! I'm thinking having a general list of questions to ask them may be in order. Things such as is my fabric currently in stock and do you have the quantity I need coming off one roll.? Is my fabric old or new - they do make their own stuff in some cases. Is my order coming from same dye lot number?
I don't know if they would physically go check to see that they had the product on have for an order before they took payment but it would sure help to know.
What do you all think about making a questions list a person could have to use in dealing with them when placing an order???? Ruth

been watching this thread a little more than others.  I just oredered fabric from them for my 64 330 resto. and here's what i discovered. the main vinyl had a water stain the entire 9 yard length on both edges.  it also had some defects about 5 feet into the bolt that will made about a two foot square unuseable. the 4 yards of cloth inlay for the seats came in two different 2 yard pieces and were clearly two different die lots. The headliner is not here yet and I don't expect it for about anouther 3 months. I Emailed Doug at SMS and sent pictures  of all and said "i don't think any of this will be a problem, however I wanted to let you know in case there is." He emailed back and said he would relpace for free any unusable fabric if I need it.  Now, Here's what I'd say. We have two choices in vendors for this stuff SMS and Legendary.  My best advise is to plan ahead, be paitient, stay calm and stay in contact with the company. I can understand why they have a B- rating, this is the "emotional" part of a car/restoration and can get frustrating.

good luck with you decision and your project

I'm considering doing the same thing. I live within reasonable distance to go there in person though. BBB lists then as having a grade of B-. My thought IF I go with them is to go there and buy the fabric and board and take my old ones for matching puposes. This removes the excuses of it's out of stock or in the process of being made or on order then months of waiting. It seems they get your money and it's use for months  while telling customers it won't be long wait. I've talked with them several times and they're very helpful and nice on the phone so t will be interesting to see what happens when I may go there to walk out with product in hand! Legendary also sells the backing board and clips too. Ruth

I know sms can be very slow getting products back to there owners.I have ordered 9 yards of vinyl and the 4 embossed vinyl seat pieces for my 1962 convertible and been waiting just for that for 3 months!
So I really didn't want to send my door panels ...so I went on there site and see they also sell the kit for doing the panels yourself.
The kit contains the ALL the backing board, vinyl (dielectric sealed seams), clips and weatherstrip to redo the panel!

I took one of my panels apart( removed chrome trims, emblem. Then pulled off the vinyl) .The backboard looks generic as it is both for right & left.

Has anyone used this kit? I may still have to wait for them to post the kits but hell at least I save on postage one way and the possible damage.
I'm gonna do it just need to see if someone's done this

Ossietim
I also have my 2dr polara to do  also and the panels are the same so I'll do one set first and see
