Re: Power Steering

To purge the air out of the system,

1. Park the car on a flat level surface.  Place the car on jack stands so the front wheels are off the ground. and can turn freely from left to right.    Follow all safe jacking and car supporting steps, don't be a fool.

2.  Fill it with power steering fluid of the correct type for what ever car/pump it is.  Don't use tranny fluid unless you  know that is what it takes, most cars don't.

3. Start you car/truck/RV and let it idle, slowly turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, then all the way back to the left.  Being sure to not let the fluid get low in the power steering pump.  If you let the fluid get low and it sucks up some air you will have to keep doing this until you get all the air out.  (Fords tend to foam up a bit when they suck in air, you just let them sit for 5 mins and the bubble will go)  Keep doing this 3-4 times and all the air should be out of the system.  If not, keep doing it till it's gone.

4. Put the car back on the ground, take it for a spin and see how it feels.  Recheck the fluid after your test drive to be sure it's not too low or too full.  Too full makes a mess on the floor or worse, and we know what too low does.

all/any of these things could be the problem.  Bottom line is you're not "moving the fluid" in order to assist the steering.  I know it's been said before however; check the easy stuff first. Fluid level, loose/worn belt, filters/screens, condition of the fluid (burned/worn out/correct fluid) the last thing might be a new pump.  Here's a story for ya.  Built the driveline in the '08 Challenger, didn't purge the power steering pump of air before running it... bammmm  ruined the pump.  acted the exact same way you are describing. I don't know if there is a problem/procedure for purging air in the system of these PS systems. let us know the outcome. good luck.

I realize this is a silly question but does it squeal when you try to turn the wheel at idle speed?  Like belt or the relief valve is opening too soon?

I have a 65 Dodge Coronet 500 with power steering. At idle, the power steering disappears. Had this same problem on my 65 Satellite. Fluid level is okay. Makes it a challenge parking at car shows. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
