RE: More Convertible top questions.

I have replaced my top several times over the years.  Assuming you are asking about a plastic rear window and can get a rear window that attaches to the side curtains in the exact same manner as your current window (same type of zipper or Velcro fastener), you have to detach everything from the main bow rearward, including the side attachments.  It does not take as much time compared to replacing the entire top but I would recommend doing the entire top.  If it is not a show car, you can probably do the project yourself over the course of a weekend and it will look good if you take your time.  If it is a show car, it will cost around $1,000 to have a shop install it (some shops will not install a top that they do not order).  If a shop orders and installs the top, it will cost around $2,000.   A good top will run $250-500 so it is not that costly if you do the job yourself.  Other incidentals such as new pads, tacking strip and cables, if needed, may cost another $50.  One thing for sure is that you need to protect the paint while you do the job.  You need to stretch the top and attach it to the body in various places with brackets and screws and it is easy to slip off a screw and scratch the paint.  Bob from Maine

Has anyone actually replaced their own top ?  I'm wondering what's involved with replacing just the rear window.
