Re: So, where did my brake fluid go?

It can be sucked up into the Power booster, it can leak in to the cabin, it can leak at ANY connection between lines (rubber to metal lines) it can leak at each wheel cylinder from the cylinder to the line, cylinder to the bleeder valve, inside the drum...cylinders can leak and weep removing of a dust cup usually confirms this as fluid traces will be in there still and/or shoes will be dark in color....wet looking as the fluid very slowly leaked out on to them.  Take a flash light, look at the tires from underneath the car, if you see marks that look like runs...like water has run down the tires and left a little "water" marks this is also a sign that wheel cylinders are leaking.

It leaked out somewhere...most likely the wheel cylinders or M/C.  Very common in old cars that sit a lot.  They may seem to work fine now....But when what ever is failing goes....your SOL....No brakes, no way to stop it....and crunch....I had mine fail like that when I was about 20 years old (on a 62 Newport of course) and nearly sent 4 people to go back to see god (they just got out of church) It's not fun when the wheel cylinder pop open as the brake shoe lining comes off the brake shoes because they have been weeping off and on loosening the glue that holds them on.

I'd investigate very carefully until I found the problem.

Thanks, Gary.  I plan to replace the original single MC with a dual reservoir one anyway.  I've been planning to do it for awhile, now, but this little episode has moved that project up to the top of my to do list.

I had a similar experience with 2 Mopars that sat for a long time. I could not find an obvious leak and assumed the fluid evaporated, guessing through the hole in the MC where the bolt goes through. DOT 5 it was, if that matters.

Thanks,
Gary H.
