Re: Holley Carb

Dodger, that is about the same as the formula that I used, but yours is simpler.  A too large CFM  can be "tuned down" but I will start with the 650 CFM. Top RPM will be about 5500.  I mean-- if you can get double pump , changeable rear jets. mechanical secondarys, with 750 CFM base plate and butterfly's, hand choke-- all for $100 ( will go ahead with new  O/H kit ) That is a bargain. Fun to see what I can get out of it and can always go larger if I want.  Sometimes less is more and that is kinda my thing.......................MO

yes MO,,,,,,,,5000 rpm times .5 times 440 ci. equals 1,100,000 (cubic inches)  divided by 1728 (one cubic foot) equals  636 cfm,,,,,it will handle it for a little over 5K but after that it will come up short,,,,,,

Joey, a bit against  popular opinion, my research shows you are right, with the way my engine is set up.  Yes the 750 works well , but if you plug my specs into the CFM math formula, A 650 cfm will work very well and like you said, have better throttle responce. If I were going new, It would be 750 CFM for future up-grades.  I think that since the 650 cfm carb is such a good buy, that is what I will give a try

Thanks all, your opinions are valued.........................MO

smaller carb should give quick throttle response with that combo

Anyone running a 650 CFM carb. on a fairly mild 440 engine?
I have a great  chance to buy a Holley 650 CFM with dual accelerator pumps and mechanical secondaries with replaceable jets in the secondarys  It is the 4250 series carb. There is a lot you can do to tune this carb.  My  limit will be about 5-5500 RPM . Non ported heads, about .475 lift cam, dual plane high riser intake.
Any significant difference between a 650 and 750 CFM on this engine?...........................MO
