RE: Points/Ballast Resistor Gurus Needed!

Just a thought here.  Have you checked your ignition tumbler.  Had a Runner that was doing similar stuff.  Replaced the actual key switch, and no more problem.  Always look for the simple stuff  first.

The resistor does get hot, that is why it is set in ceramic as a heat sink, but lack of voltage going to it points toward either a bad switch or poor connection at firewall bulkhead connection,,,,,,, your first test sounds correct with the 5 volts after going through the resistor,,,,

Did the volt test.  Had some changing conditions.

First test with key in RUN.  5 volts on one side, 12V on other side of Ballast
resistor, 5V on positive side of coil.

Car would start up when key turned to start then shut down when key was
released.

Then car would not start when turned to start and then fire up as the key was
allowed to go back to RUN.

Finally, it wouldn't start.

After that, I checked at the ballast resistor after having the key on RUN for a
while and the IGN2 side at the ballast was near 0V and the IGN side was around 5
or 6V.  Ballast was very hot to the touch.

I think I've got every failure mode there now.
