The only rational explanation I've ever heard for the GTO being the first muscle car,, or the "one that started it all", is that it was the first car that was a dedicated performance issue.  All GTO's came with a "big" engine, whereas, Sport Furys and SuperSport chevys for instance were instead,  a trim option. (Brings us back to the 300's right ?)   I guess it took the 67 Dodge RT, and GTX to get Mopar in the mix. I aint sayin it's the right answer.  Just the one that makes the most sense to me.

We need to compare this '56 Golden Hawk to a 1962 Polara 500: 361, advertised power 305 hp,  395 lb-ft torque. What car would win this drag race? The '56 or the '62? Don't know offhand. Much depends on the weight of the '56.
