Re: VIN me, stamp me

It is illegal to remove or alter a VIN tag.  Even if it is just to paint it.  That doesn't mean it doesn't happen.  I had my SO numbers checked and confirmed, to make sure it was the "real deal" and to have my car added to the max wedge registry.  Finding a new VIN tag is not going to happen.  trust me, i've been trying... :)  You can find the original rivets that were used in the 60s but you won't find an original VIN tag.  They do make "collectible" tags that could be punched and riveted in, but again they won't be legal VIN tags and certainly will not pass any inspection.

Good luck

So how can we secure our VIN tags, they aren't riveted.

Just and FYI, in a 1962 Newport they come right off, and go right back on.  I've popped mine off and popped it back on.  No damage.  Remember it's an old car now.  The steel underneath tends to rust a bit and not much holds it in place anymore except habit.  mine looked like this one.  http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21961

whole thing sounds weird to me,,,,,the vin can not be removed with out destroying it as far as I know, it is not riveted or screwed down, and yes the S.O. numbers are on the rear shelf and radiator support of the cars, the only thing removable is the fender tag

Hi all,

I know this mail list had discussed this in the past. I can't find it in the archive, maybe someone has it saved and can share. Or knows.

Generally, a fellow with a 1965 Dodge is attempting to find out if the VIN for his car is stamped anywhere on the car. The painter lost the original VIN tag.  In 1980 the Colorado State police told him that "the original serial number (VIN) could be  reconstructed from the 2 stamped  S.O. numbers on the upper radiator brace and the rear window shelf area. The numbers are both the same and match the S.O. number on the fender tag.  He wants to get the original VIN for his Dodge.

I looked around the Web and Mr. Google returned the typical chorus of conflicting statements:
* VINs weren't stamped into the body until the late 1960s (1969, 1968). (Various sites)
* Not until 1971 claims http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2006/08/01/hmn_feature21.html

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Gary H.
