Re: Broken 742

Your right Steve, the answer seems to be the same from everyone. Just got off the phone with the rear end shop and they said no one makes a race gear for this one until you get into the 4:88 + range. I'm going to dial it back to a 3:55 and keep street tires on it until I can pony up the dough for a Dana with an o/d in front of it. I didn't really need to retire anyway. T

Hmmm, in your third picture I spy a scattershield and Cal-Tracs - I love 8 3/4s but it looks like it's time for you to step up to a Dana.

You don't mention what the car weighs but if you're hooking it up on the Drag Radials it's probably time.

Just my $.02...

Forget about fuel economy, I'm getting 250 miles per Richmond ring gear. I've seen a lot of Mopar race cars with 8 3/4s under them, even some with stock axles but this one broke the first time I jumped on it with the new tires. For those of you with sticky tires, am I wasting my time with a 742 or should I go ahead and start scavenging for a DANA? 4 speed, 4:10, drag radials (occasionally), street car (usually). Glad I stuck a magnet in the diff reservoir which kept the broken teeth out of the chunk. Would appreciate some feedback. Thanks
