Re: Starting problem

 Bob F.

Have you checked the bulkhead connector?  In addition to burned/corroded connecors, sometimes the contact pins get pushed back into their housings and barely make contact, becoming intermittent.  It takes a little doing, and I recommend removing the driver's seat for more working room (unless you're either a jockey or a contortionist) but once you're under there, the inner section of the bulkhead connector comes out pretty easily by simply squeezing the clips on either side and pulling firmly.  the wiring harness will have some clips holding it in place, but You can work the harness out of them and get the connector into a position where you can get at the contact pins to inspect and clean them.  This sounds like a lot more work than it really is, especially after you've done it once or twice (and I'm a big guy and not very flexible).

You might get lucky and not have to get under the dash if you just disconnect the engine compartment side of the bulkhead connector and spray both sides with WD-40, then plug and unplug it several times.  Then load the connector up with dielectric grease and plug it in.

Good luck!

Hi -  I thought I resolved the starting problem but I made it a half mile before it began again.  In sum, as soon as I let go of the key it stalls.  If I keep the key on start it keeps running.  I have replaced the ballast resister, ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder with no change.

Any ideas?  Could a bad starter relay cause the symptoms?  What am I missing?  Bob

Don,t get pissed at me,but did you remove the negative black plastic cap off the terminals? You can move the wires and have it cause a open in the circuit, check with a friend and move the bulk head connector and see what happens, mrmopartech

Hi - I replaced my battery cables.  I then tried to start the 273 and nothing - no starter or indicator lights although headlights, horn and fuel gauge are OK.  I ran a cable directly from the solenoid terminal on the starter to the positive terminal on the battery and the starter ran. It is possible I jostled a wire on the firewall but I was not anywhere near there.  The wire connecting the neutral safety switch on the transmission to the bulkhead connector was recently replaced and looks good. Any ideas of what the problem is? Any reasonably simple tests I can run? Thanks, Bob
