Re: Friday Puzzlers 10-10-2014

I've got the book Chrysler & Imperial The Postwar Years by Richard M. Langworth.  It shows all those changes and the rest.  I wish I had a way to scan it and post it.  The best I could do is take pictures with my phone.

Most definitely!  The 1963 Chrysler was actually developed from Exner's proposed 1962 Imperial.  The stylists took the S series Imperial, removed the 1955-56 style taillamps and worked in round taillights instead.  Up front the grille was cleaned up and the headlamp area simplified.  The rear window was shrunk - the S series rear window was similar to the production 1961-62 with wraparound glass.  The rounded sides with curved side glass was also dropped - fuselage styling would have to wait for Engel and his 1969 models - and the blade fenders smoothed out.  The speed boat windshield, similar to that used on the 1962 Plymouths and Dodges, was dropped and replaced by the 1960-61 Chrysler design.

Although the exterior of Exner's new S series was completely new, the cars were going to be based on the cowl and floor of the 1960-61 models - 118" wheelbase for Plymouth and Dart, 122" for Polara, DeSoto and Chrysler.   The Imperial was also supposed to be on the the 122" platform, apparently.

I have some photos of the proposed 1962 Imperial taken in the summer of 1959, before Chrysler cancelled the proposed 1962 DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial due to a lack of cash.  At that point the word was to de-fin the 1961 Chrysler and Imperial bodies for 1962.   The shrunken Plymouth and Dodge were being tooled at that point.  But you can see the 1963 Chrysler in the proposed 1962 Imperial.  Originally the 1963 Imperial was to use the 1963 Chrysler body, but that would have been too small for a luxury car and looking far too much like a Chrysler.
