Herb's procedure will indeed work, but personally I do not like to beat against my axle bearings with a hammer. It is very simple to remove the axle shafts for stud replacement and it also allows you to inspect the bearings and seals and repack the bearings if needed. Just my 2 cents.

Can I change the studs to RH with the axle in the differential or do I have to take it out and take it to a machine shop?
