Re: ZDDP Off Shoot, Oil change interval

Long as the engine is out anyway Rich................  As for me, the two newer vehicles get Mobil 1 in their respective needed weights Spring and Fall.  Miles don't matter.  The bike gets changed at 5000 miles, PLUS it gets new oil before winter layup, regardless of miles.  63 gets the change before layup as well, although not with the proper oil it appears so that point is probably moot.
I do the oil change before layup because I don't want any impurities ect  in the engine sitting there doing its bad thing all winter.  I figure any moisture it builds up over the winter will burn out when I get it going the following spring, cause it WILL be hot enough on the first run of the season...... I've done it that way since that engine was rebuilt back in '77 so I won't entertain thoughts that I'm wrong,  If it blows up this spring I'm blaming it on the oil, not the change interval !!!

When I pull my engine I put in new oil. That was pretty often in the past. I'll have to change my style now:-) Hopefully there will be less pulling and more changing lol

I’m reading these posts with interest, and my view is I change the oil in my ‘65 at regular intervals, (5-30, plus a ZDDP additive).                                                                                                                                                               My theory being  oil changes are cheap compared to potential engine damage. My $.02 worth..............

I can tell you that a NEW car states that oil has to be changed

1. at least once per year
2. or no more than 10k miles....7k is better but 10k is OK
3. or the "change oil" light comes on.

New cars are made of different metals than our cars, closer tolerances and less blow by and other pollutants.  They can get by with longer distance between oil changes.

But even my 1962 owners manual states change the motor oil at least 1 time per year.  If you take your car out on a good run (say 30 miles at freeway speeds nice sunny day), burn a tank a fuel out of it at least once a year I bet you will be fine with annual oil changes.

Of course sitting out in the cold, and rain and snow will let more water build up in the crankcase than if it's parked in a nice dry garage somewhere.

Hi Nico,
New oils will last far longer than those formulas of yesteryears. It makes a difference as to how warm the oil gets when you drive. It needs to get hot enough to boil out any accumulated water. Oil + water seems to make acids that eat metal (your engine internals) so you should make sure you're not feeding their habit! Being somewhat frugal I change every other year. I don't put many miles on per year but those I do are enough to really warm things up! Tires too! I'm using Royal Purple currently.

All, been reading these threads with great enjoyment to the knowledge that is out there. Need to expand this thread to Oil change intervals. As I winter in Florida to work on my 65 Bel vert, it occurs to me that my other 62-65's sit for almost 6 months and am wondering should i change my oil when I move back north to Virginia. Currently have been using Rotella T-6 synthetic but from previous posts that may now be a no-no, so do I change syn oil every 6 months just because the motor sat for 6 months. members from the northern states may have a good insight to my question. Thanks in advance.
