Noises can be a problem to find.

I went through the same thing, I took the belt off and still thought (wrong) that I was hearing a noise.  I replaced the water pump and alternator, still had the noise. 

The last thing  did was replace the belt - it was the belt.  The belt was apparently pulling into one of the pulley groves and making a noise when it pulled out.

However the good thing is now I have a spare water pump and alternator for my next road trip.  Good luck finding the problem.
