Re: compression check question



dodged a bullet on this one. Took a milk jug of the stuff down to my radiator guy.,  When he opened the jug we were both hit by the smell of gasoline, then i realized I had removed the fuel pump and let it dangle by its hose into my drain pan under the car. I believe it was mixture of rust and gasoline. And all night I had just laid there wondering how much dough it would take to rebuild a 340.

Oil in coolant floats.  If you have an overflow bottle it will collect inside it and coat the inside with oil.  It looks and smells like motor oil.  If it's a major oil leak it will mix up and look like chocolate milk in the radiator but most of the time when it leaks is that bad it goes the other way, coolant in the oil and it's the motor oil that will look like chocolate milk.  

You car sounds like normal to me.  Flush it out really good, flush out the radiator and the heater core too.  If water won't flow through the heater core be sure undo the lines at the heater and flush it directly, if water still won't go through it or TONS of crud come out of it the heater core will be shot and need to be replaced too....they tend to leak once they have been neglected.

If by suspicious you mean a gray kinda foamy look, then yeah, it's most likely a head gasket.  You really have to be more specific when asking such questions.

I am having blown head gasket fears, drained coolant  for a water pump swap and  coolant looks suspicious. I want to do a compression check, but I have the front of the motor  torn  off (fan, pulleys, belts, alternator. Can I crank it to do a compression check without the alternator hooked up and running?
