A different year will work, as long as you use the 65's valve
body/shifter assembly, and of course  the 65's tail shaft/output
shaft.
I'd be careful about buying a rebuilt trans from someone I didn't know
very well. And I mean intimately well.
You'd also be very smart to use a later model input shaft/reaction
shaft/front pump. Then you'd have the luxury of being able to buy a
new convertor off the shelf. More variety of stall speeds.
