RE: timing

Not sure what engine U have - but the diagnosis is the same:

Be sure you have the spark plug wires in the correct firing order.

Remove the valve cover on the #1 cylinder side. Remove all spark plugs if necessary to turn engine over by hand.

Turn the engine by hand until both valves are closed on #1. #1 cylinder will be at the top of the compression stroke.

Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing to the #1 terminal. If not remove and reposition the distributor.

I would try this before assuming the timing chain is off.

Subject: timing

I changed cams a while back. I tried to start it up and it backfires through the carb.
Does it sound like I did not line up the marks on the timing chain right ( 180 ) out ?
Is there any way to tell besides taking the timing cover back off?
What would be a good gasket to use?
          Thanks
