Re: hard starting 440

The idea is NOT to run an electric pump and a mechanical pump at the same time.  You use the electrical pump to supply fuel to the mechanical pump and fill the bowls in the carburetor BEFORE cranking the engine.  the use of "Y" connectors and check valves allows you to do this.   The electric pump fills the fuel line from the tank to the engine. It also fills the bowls in the carb because the check valves allow you to bypass the mechanical pump. You just let the electric pump run for 10-20 seconds and then you shut it off.   When you crank the engine the mechanical pump then supplies the fuel to the carb. The check valves make sure the fuel from the mechanical pump goes to the carb and not back to the tank.  Its very simple if you think about it.

A week or 2 ago, there was a discussion about hard starting and electric fuel pumps. My 440 is hard to start if I don't get to it in 3 or 4 weeks. A few questions. What would be the best electric fuel pump to use-do you block off the stock mechanical pump and if so, how-and do you need to run a fuel pressure regulator? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
