Well, since our website STILL does not have a "Forwardlook Lifestyle" message board,
here's this week's....(soon to become lost, in this non-dedicated, catch-all message board)
....FWDLK dream house.
Man, a finned car would certainly look great, parked at this house's curb.
Yeah, so it's spendy, in a ritzy L.A. burb; but, it could be easily replicated, in any nice residential
area

Location: Parts Unknown | Neil,
You would have shat yourself over the house "Harriet" lived in near one I remodeled about 20 years ago.
Much like the one you posted, it had post and beam construction with wood, glass, and colorful fiberglass
panels throughout. Bart and Harriet were airline employees after the war - never had kids - and had lots
of disposable income. They NEVER remodeled, and the house remained furnished in EXPENSIVE original
Googie stuff, right down to a signed, original Calder mobile hanging over a sheath lamp, whose radiated
heat caused the mobile to spin. The only thing wrong with the entire scene was the 66 Ford LTD in the pipe
pole carport, but when asked what they traded in to get the Ford, the correct answer was "a 1957 Chrysler
New Yorker".
I did not have the "nerve" to ask Harriet what would become of her place after she passed, as she had no
children, but I went by there about 5 years ago and the place was flattened, replaced by another cookie-
cutter "McMansion".

| This is my place. It's an all original 1966 modern ranch just north of Los Angeles. We bought it from the original owner and it is now a registered Historic-Cultural Landmark with the City of Los Angeles. The furnishings range from the mid-50's to the late 60's. Restoring the house has been as fun and as challenging as any FL Mopar has been. Of course, I has to sell off a bunch of cars to get it, but I kept my two favorites and they are tucked away in the garage.

Location: North Carolina | I would absolutely vote for a Forward Look Lifestyle message board! My wife and I love almost anything Mid-Century. We even have a subscription to Atomic Ranch we often drool over. All of my furniture and lighting is from the 50's. Also radios, stereo, dinette set, kitchenware and clothes are all from the Forward Look era or slightly before. Oh yeah, even Christmas is retro.

All you need to do is rip off that sedate hipped roof and go all crazy with a cantilevered, tilted plane roof
and a whole lot of floor-to-ceiling glass. The corner lot and two-access driveway offers an incredible porte
cochere opportunity, much like the patio awning in Neil's post.
How are your carpentry skills ?

| Well since we ain't gonna get a FL Lifestyle board here, let's stop pining for it and someone just do it somewhere else on the net.
I would, but my net tech skills are like my mechanic skills - your average glazed donut is more qualified than I am for that kind of thing.

| Ranch style homes typically had 5 specific traits exemplified by architect Cliff May, the "father" of the "California Ranch" style.
1. Fitted to the site (low slung, good proportion of house to lot).
2. Blank facade to the public (no visible windows).
3. Built of natural materials (mine has "glacier rock" on the facade and the roof).
4. The patio is the key (in California, outdoor living was of prime importance).
5. Corredor: the original family room (this is a deep, covered porch that typically runs the entire width of the rear of the home. Typically connected to the house with floor to ceiling glass walls).
Most of the ranch homes followed this formula. They are typically plain in front and wild in the back -- like a mullet.
More pictures are attached.

Or do you just rely on the A/C to keep them cool inside?

| There are a lot of great houses around. What is happening here is that younger people are moving into the questionable areas and restoring the houses... And bringing the neighborhoods back up again. It just takes time.
Ian.. There is lot of heat transfer through the glass as well as the terrazzo floors. The rock facade also doesn't help much... Though having a white house with huge eaves helps a little in the summer. Even so, the a/c and heat are on almost year round. And it's an all electric house... So the heat pump is electric too! My power bill would make you spit out your coffee!
There's a price to pay when you have old stuff... But it's so worth it!!

Location: North Carolina | Awesome pics Aaron!!! My wife and I immerse in the culture from the 40's to the early 60's as much as we can. I am so glad to see others, who aren't necessarily Rockabilly guys (one of the best scenes to find like-minded peeps) into Mid-Century houses, cars, clothes, music, furniture and life in general. Though I wasn't born yet, I've loved it since Mom put on the first Elvis record and showed me & my brother swing dancing. Btw, between the rockabilly(1950's) and swing dance scenes (1930's-1950's) there's no shortage of folks to share a common taste. Though we are in the minority with the daily dress, even when not at a dance, lol.

Richard Neutra was a celebrated Mid Century Modern architect.
This article appeared in the 1/20 l.A. Times, so looked up this house, which was interior

I am a high school teacher... So I couldn't afford a named architects house. I just knew what I liked and didn't look in Beverly Hills for it. It also helped that I bought my last house at the bottom of the market.

Though it isn't a "Jetson" style house, we are playing around with ideas to make it more so, including changing the roof line somewhat. It won't be cheap but this is the last place we will live so we may as well make it like we want it. |

I actually had next to the same wallpaper as in the Vegas 1 picture - it was almost a dead ringer, so I can but presume that it was by the same artist.
The wallpaper was of extremely good quality - still have it, but stupidly enough, we painted over it with white back in the late 80-ies. |

Location: bishop, ca | Brent, most people who can afford a 2MIL home can lay down more than the usual 20%, but, for this exercise, let's
assume $400K-down and a reasonable 30-year 3% APR.
Financing $1.6MIL would calculate to around $6,750.00 monthly mortgage payments, or around $81K/year.
Taxes are normally calculated at 1.25% (on the $2MIL), or, about $25K/year.
Homeowners insurance would be about $4K/year.
Together, you get a nut of about $110K/year.
Also, today, lenders are requiring that the loan:income ratio should be as high as 35%, so, to qualify for the $1.6MIL mortgage,
a household's verifiable annual income would need to be about $315,000.00 .
"For THIS house"?, I hear you ask.
Location, location, location, as they say.
BTW, nice homes are typically presented in the Sunday Real Estate color-Rotogravure section.
Your similar house's value may vary.

This week's Forwardlook Lifestyle home is an 'affordable' (to someone) 5BDRM/7bath(!) estate
home.
A 7-car garage would be nice, too, but, we can't have everything (like, even, a dedicated "Forwardlook

I don't see anything : "Mediterranean Revival" in this design--except for the Cyprus trees...

Here's a 'modest' ($1.287 MIL) FWDLK house in a fashionable neighborhood, that
is advertised as being a "time capsule", with mid-century furnishings.
Did a Google-Earth on it, and see that it is in no need of National Flood Insurance
coverage, or, probably, earthquake coverage (because of the high loss deductible).
Well built, One-story wood framed (low-) ranch-style residences are fairly earthquake-
proof.

The front and rear did have three stacks of double windows, however the bottom set needed to be boarded in since every time we would mow, the lose gravel from the roof would break them. We went through 9 windows in a year (two seasons of mowing). The rear gives you a good shot of our neighbors more interesting roof line.

Location...how's that go again?
===============================
It goes like this: The location needs to provide a benefit-to-detriment ratio relevant to
the cost.
Lets see: 90,000 vs. 1,500,000 or 50,000,000.
At 1.5M, that place needs to provide 16.5 times the benefit ratio to the 90K "location"
At 50M for the Palm Springs digs, that number jumps exponentially to 555.6 times !
Somehow, this old farm boy simpleton just can't see the cost-to-benefit ratio being more
than a lot of Disneyland puffery. I don't understand how the common wage earner keeps
his head above water, let alone can enjoy life ... or even think about signing on for a nice
mid-century modern house to call "home".
It's sad, really. |

West L.A. bungalows (1400sq. ft) hit $100k in the mid 70's.
They're now at about +/- $700K.

I cannot fathom carrying that kind of debt, let alone what other options there are in life to

Money talks, but today's FWDLK Lifestyle houses could be built anywhere your checkbook

The first one is a true split-level design; the second is a classic open-beam/open-floorplan

I can only hope this means if you want a FWD look lifestyle house (whatever the hell that means ) you get crap insulation, a little asbestos, windows that leak and some piss yellow covers for your couch Then you can raise that heavy ass wood garage door by hand and pray your all wheel drums stop you. if not your matching piss yellow seat covers will have you protected when you s**t your pants from almost wrecking
===================================================
Hey Buddy, ... whatchoo got against asbestos ?
Personally, I like the matching-scent urine soaked cushions. But that's just me.

Money talks, but today's FWDLK Lifestyle houses could be built anywhere your checkbook desires.
===============================================================
Stupid money aside, you are spot on as far as building in this style anywhere, although even contemporary
designers cited the southern California climate as being ideal for the large glass and minimally allowed wall /
roof insulation so desired in the Googie look.
Modern tech has made such a home more practical in the cold zones, but there is just *something* about
having a palm tree in the courtyard that really sets the tone, you know ?
With a large arsenal of saved mid-century modern furniture and building hardware, the wifeperson has pressed
this torn mind to abandon the Victorian depot look for one that George Jetson might find comfortably homelike.
It will be interesting to unleash the Googie "juices" on this place, given how committed I am already to a general
footprint and profile, but I enjoy a good challenge and the cars will look SO good at the curb.
I'll bet I can do it for less than 10 payments on a much lesser place in L.A. too. |

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | This house is (was) within 15 miles of where I live in Victoria. It was pulled down several years ago for new development. This is typical.
We have an extremely upscale neighbourhood here in Victoria, ( not where this mid century house was though) called " Uplands" which was started in the 1930s and was still being developed into the seventies. Now they have torn down several of the mid-century houses and buillt monster mansions in their places, the ocean-front house in the bottom photo is one of them, currently offered for sale at a mere $8,900.000.00

Especially nice when something far cooler and genuinely historic got the bulldozer boogie to make space for such
fine examples of conspicuous and excessive consumption. No doubt the builder AND owner hold Beemers and
Porsches in high regard. Sorry, ... that sh!t just ain't my bag.

This house wasn't for sale when we moved here, but I had spotted it at the time and dreamt about it. I even took a picture of it two years ago. Now that we bought a house and we're getting used to it, it comes up for sale on the market and it's right in our price range!!
Sure, it's not the same level as the Californian examples posted here before, but still, it was an architect-designed model house awarded in a famous local raffle in 1957-58. Most of the original features are untouched and very mid-century modern (the bronze fireplace and decor, the airy open spaces, the ceiling, etc.) and it could be brought back to perfection (in my opinion) with just a little work.
Anyway, here's the listing (and pics) for it: http://www.remax-quebec.com/fr/inscription/Q/10561519.rmx?source=ce...
BEWARE: THE LISTING IS IN FRENCH!

Great to see so many mid century features still in place!

Location: NY & VT | Very cool house David! - reminds me of a late '50s William Kriesel house, he was an architect in Palm Springs CA who designed modest MCM houses for the masses, "butterfly" rooflines and other iconic modern designs, sort of Googie really, were a part of his signature work. You can Google him and see them... and best of all, Kriesel's still alive! He was honored very recently. You don't have to be rich to appreciate, or live in, a dwelling of good design!!!! |

Location: bishop, ca | Today's FWDLK houses are courtesy of the L.A. Times for SUN 5/19/13, and are
a contrast in FWDLK designs.
The first one is a relatively common design, featuring an open span, vaulted ceiling, with
spacious glass fronted walls (over-looking a golf course, but which we all could
overlook, too, I guess).
In contrast is a Eames' designed experimental, which has reportedly had its interior
design and outfitting be restored.
And in contrast to that design is the interior photo, from the Southern California Edison's
files, which is captioned: "Relaxing in an all-electric home, 1955."---which is the look
that most of us, of a certain age, can recall seeing in our youths.
(Altho how many of our daddy's and mommy's relaxed in their formal-looking dressed up
attire is questionable....daddy's white socks are a nice touch).

In Spokanistan, the winters are so cold, it creates building code challenges for thermal allowances
to recreate that look of big glass walls. It will be interesting to see what the City lets me get away

Finned cars were not universally acclaimed, either.
Altho my crib was a bargain at 28HUGE (that's right), here's some Post-Modern digs which may be
more within your pocketbook range, including the first guy (a tad larger than my own place), is a
fixer-upper, and a definite tear-down prospect, for a very reasonable asking price (land value) you
must admit.
The remaining spots are definitely CA-affordable, that most any FWDLK'er would be happy to call
home.

FAB house! No reason those types of houses can't be built today, esp. with all of the improved building materials and technologies.
Heck, just the advent of computer aided drafting opened up a whole new world of possibilities to the designers/architects/contractors.
Where has all the imagination gone...long time passin'? Sigh...

One would think that window shades (and lined "Warm Windows" drop-down shades) would be a desirable feature in these
houses.
What also makes Mid Century Modern houses so condusive to SoCal living is that a pane of glass has an R factor of ONE,
and they are, typically, window-friendly designs.
Dual panes have an R factor of two; and then, there's 'Argon' filled and 'laminated, and triple-paned, and Low-E ratings,
but IIRC, you are lucky to get windows with R factors of even six.
Our MCM cars are exciting to look at, too, but they are not practical to live with on a daily basis, today, without some sorts
of modifications and/or conciliations (like parking far-away from threats to their well being).

Location: Arizona | I don't understand the attraction of these "glass houses". They look like an industrial building where the tilt-up walls were made of glass instead of precast concrete. But then I like my privacy too. I can see the attraction of a glass wall if you live up on a hill with a grand view or on the 21 floor in Manhattan but for most of us peons who live in less rarefied locations I just don't see it, no pun intended. |

Location: bishop, ca | The idea of glass walls was to combine the interior experience with the external world.
The temperature in the desert SoWest allowed for the sense of communal living, with large expanses of internal
spaces flowing into the outside world.
MCM also combined different and then-new architectural materials, surfaces and even water (pools) in order to create a
futuristic experience for the beginning of the nuclear jet age (soaring cantilevered roofs).
The houses were as free flowing as the car designs, and, there were no 'rules' about how a house was supposed to look.
Some of the designs, above, are closed in, but they are, still, free from the conventional stylings that dominated the
early 20th century 2-story wood frame tract-boxes that we all know, too well.
If the glass walls suggest anything, it is "freedom" from conventionality (just as our cars evoke an emotional response
good/bad, but not indifference....from on-lookers).

Location: Parts Unknown | Glass walls were just one of many MCM "expressions". Open floor plans were a big one, as
was the use of unconventional building materials ... colored fiberglass, exposed beam and post
work, aluminum grids, beams, and fabric. It also enjoyed a mixing of organic and inorganic,
such as the above with nearby "panels" of stone, tile, or wood.
This thread is excessively focused on the over-the-top glass and concrete movie star/insurance
company headquarters look for some reason when that look only represented a small slice of the
overall "scene" and was not generally what the public had available to them outside of strip malls,
bank lobbies and Googie diners. Everyone saw this in Denney's, but few lived in it. They knew a
more conventional version.
I guess I'll make an effort to photograph some real life workaday MCM stuff around my ville to
show as examples of what REAL people lived in.

Location: bishop, ca | MCM designed homes would have been custom-built houses, no matter when they were built.
Unless you are talking about Ranch-type tracts.
Developers were only interested in maximizing their investments, by turning out cookie-cutter designs, to realize economies of scale in their building materials costs.
Smart developers would build slight variations in the adjacent houses' designs, to avoid Stepford-house appearances.
Most Midwestern upper-class developments feature Tudor-English, Gothic, or Early American 2+ story houses.
The Vintage MCM style houses that you'll find were custom built; just check out their neighboring houses' designs,
for comparison.

The first eight houses, below, were designed by various universities, as entrants in the "Solar
Decathlon" , and these houses will be CONSTRUCTED, as a part of the 20 designs-competition,
in a housing tract at the "Great Park in Irvine", CA.
As the article states, the 20 houses will have been constructed by OCT 3, and then will become
available for public viewing between 10/10- 10/13.
The remaining two residences show typical Mid Century Modern design features.

This last spring Dianne and I bought a home built in 1960. All the home have a similar look with a few floor plans and trim differences. We may not have a million dollar view, but we do have neighbors we can talk to over the fence and dogs for our dog to talk to.
I did have an opportunity to live in Oscar Niemeyer designed campus housing when I was a kid, but I was too young to appreciate it.

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | The B.C. Binning House, West Vancouver, BC. 1939
"The Binning House is a one-storey house located on a quiet residential street in West Vancouver. Designed in 1939 by Bertram Charles (B.C.) Binning, the house is a very early example of the Modern architectural movement in Canada. Built into a sloping site overlooking Burrard Inlet and Vancouver, the design of the house has geometric forms with open-plan layouts, trapezoidal shapes in both glass and tile, angled furniture and walls, and murals. The residence is an impressive mix of both art and architecture.
Since its completion in 1941, many artists and architects made the pilgrimage to see and experience the house and visit with Bert and his wife Jessie. Despite the fact that now modernist technologies are entrenched in practically every aspect of day-to-day life, it is difficult to comprehend how revolutionary the Binning Residence would have been at the time of its creation. The house and its designer strongly influenced other (now) famous Canadian architects, like Arthur Erickson and Ron Thom. Bertram Binning passed away in 1976 and his widow Jessie continued to live in the house until 2007 at the age of 101."

Location: Parts Unknown | Great place, Ian. Mr. Binning was VERY cutting edge for 1939. The modernist movement began
with the Bauhaus in Germany in the 20's, but with the National Socialist bent for more traditional
styles, was closed. Influential movers and shakers, Gropius and Van der Rohe taking their stylistic
movement elsewhere, Gropius going to Cambridge to teach at Harvard, Van der Rohe going to Chicago
to head up design at IIT.
One of Van der Rohe's favored stylistic elements was the external expression of framework beams
and columns. One of his best known works is the Seagrams building in NYC, which had tremendous
impact on this type of architecture and remains influential to this day.
Below are some photos of a residence here in Spokane that strongly exhibits this design element.

Like a tongue sandwich, the first one speaks for itself.
The second one has a jaw dropping price, due to its reportedly having 200-degrees of

A few posts ago, I touted the Taschen books on Mid Century Modern houses and design.
Bought this COFFEE table (it turns out) book for Xmas, and opened its package as a
present to myself.
Anyone familiar with Taschen books knows that they never disappoint...and, BOY, does this
guy delight!
Here's some random pages from it...and, altho its architectural designs' current market prices might be
too high for most of us, we can dream, can't we (about dream houses)?

Wow...this first one ranks right up there, IMO, with any of the FWDLK housing designs, and
it could be yours, IF the price is right (8.4M) for you.
The last one I'd have liked to see, in color, but, this new construction apparently sold very quickly.

Location: bishop, ca | Goes without saying, about 'location', but, My-Exner, this fantastic house (can't possibly calculate its land-lot value)
would cost 15MIL+ in California...but, then, its owner could enjoy its open-door outdoor experience year-around.
It's in the 50's, here, today; same for MN, except for the inclusion of a 'minus' sign for Minneapolis' temps.

Oracle Inc,'s CEO's daughter bought it, and some adjacent land, for $30MIL, so that she can TEAR IT DOWN,

This house's location-view is apparently very desirable...especially if (daddy's) money is no 'object'!

Some more houses that you WOULD get caught dead-in...
The rear and interior views pertain to the previous front/entryway pics.
In the very last photo, note how there were no CC&R's in effect regarding a house's construction
design.
What would the two adjacent property owners have to say to each other; "Nice house"?

Location: bishop, ca | Finally getting around to enjoying my Modernism Revisited Coffee Table book (it ain't something
that you want to try to read in bed...which is too bad, cause this book will definitely get
you into 'dreamland!)...that you can see, at the top of this thread-page, above.
Saving the dust jacket, so here's the hard-cover, and a portrait of the man, hisself, Julius Schulman,
who took all of the book's exquisite photographs.
And, another random couple houses in the book; it is nice to see that 'Contemporary-Modern' designed
houses are virtually, and visually, identical to what was being produced, Post WWII.
And, to prove the point, there's a custom built crib, for the low, low, not price of 8.85Huge...

Location: Parts Unknown | With the weather too cold to enjoy working outside, I've concentrated some spare time on
interior details ...
Accessories are key, but more involved elements like wallcoverings MAKE the scene. Grass-
cloth is expensive and a real PITA to install, but was such an integral part of any sophisticated
Googie-era interior. Odd lighting in my place took 12 different paint samples before we arrived
at one that looked good.
I will change all the interior mouldings to blond-finish ash, maple, or hemlock as time allows.

| Finally had time to check on this thread and have enjoyed it immensely. Here is a photo of my MCM home in Albuquerque. A very similar climate to Palm Springs with a fair stock of 50's and 60's modern architecture, but property values are literally 10% as high as Los Angeles. Rare to see a MCM home go under the blade to make way for a McMansion, as the underlying property is rarely considered valuable enough to merit it. So long as you don't mind all the blue meth floating around, it is a really interesting place to live.

I said 'Concord' I meant "Concept 11.0"
It's got 110 watts RMS, per channel; it's a monster, with Bose 901 Series VI suspended speakers.
It appears that the Yamaha, or the Concept, are re-branded receivers.
That's a Technics 1650 record changer with Grado Sonata-1 cartridge.
(BTW, for anyone having the earlier Series III or IV 901 speakers, Bose has an un-announced recall on their
replacement(!) with the Series VI...if your speakers are exhibiting sonic roughness/distorsion.
Their speakers' foam surrounds are deteriorating.
They send you new speakers and you put your speakers into their shipping boxes and return them to Bose).

| Since this thread is the go-to place for modern homes, I might as well go ahead and post this for those who are interested. Locally (Charleston, WV) one of the most famous examples of mid century architecture was vandalized and trashed. Littered with obscene graffiti ranging from drugs to sex, it's absolutely disgusting. I have no sympathy for any human being who does anything like this. Or, for that matter, the owners who would let this go on while they knew about it.

| Glad someone brought this thread back... I was itching to post something here.
A few days ago while driving down one of our many backroads, I spotted a dilapidated 50s home. I walked up and peeked in the windows, looks like nobody has been home a long time. Judging by the appliances I can see through the window, it was probably built in the early 60s. Weeds are pretty high, and what remains of what I imagine a once beautiful landscape is long overgrown.
Going back with a camera and old clothes next time. |

| Same here. I don't care for the over the top stuff. It was flooded at one time, judging by the mud in the basement. We had an awful flood in 2003 or 2004, it would have been completely underwater. I did notice there was some period correct furniture inside.
It's structurally sound though, and they're doing some construction work awfully close to it. I don't want to see it get demolished. |

Location: DFW, TX | I took a long, hard look at this house. The pricing seemed reasonable, considering it is a 3,600sf 1955 dream house.
http://retrorenovation.com/2014/04/17/1955-midcentury-modern-house-...
Unfortunately, that is a CASH price, since the house needs so much work that a bank won't finance it.
My off-the-cuff estimate is that it would take another $150k to get it where it needs to be. Many
foundation issues, plumbing issues, electrical issues, pool issues, and the house is in overall terrible
condition. And it is literally 500 feet from an outright ghetto and a major highway now butts up to
the backyard.
But MAN OH MAN what a house!!!
If you want to burn up 15 minutes to see the most beautiful MCM house I've ever seen that is
basically completely destroyed, here you go:

It's been a slow news-week, on houses that you'd 'deign' to live in, so, here's a TRACT that bears some
interest, in the mecca of M.-M. domiciles (Palm Springs), which are profiled in the "Modernism Revisited" book, that is
featured, above on this page:

Even though I prefer the old way for just about everything, the new Predicta TVs are very nice. The original Predictas were beautiful and original in design, yet plagued with reliability issues (Sounds rather familiar, doesn't it?).
Consoles are more of my style, though. Cheaper, easier to work on, more reliable. |

Didn't see anything on the listing about getting it for 350Large.
Did see that you would pay something more than $5K/year in taxes (+/- $450.00 per month plus sewer/water/upkeep/insurance).
Kinda hard to locate on a small scale (big-area) map, but this crib is located south east of Akron, and east of Barberton,
and just southwest of the intersection of #224, and, that north:south highway.
I'd like to own it, and its .4(small lot) acre somewhere warmer...

The taxes will be adjusted when the house sells.
Can you check with your county Tax Collector/Assessor's office, or even with a local realtor, as to what the property taxes would be on
a re-sale for $350K?
Thanks!

Yes taxes on that house would be about 6k a year, 1500$ a quarter. There is no tax on a resale, unless your a corporation flipping multiple houses.
As long as you lived in it for two years there is no gains tax up to 250k profit.

down to 350k... Still she will be going lower. Neighborhood was pretty beat up, almost completely redone now but brought prices crashing with a couple big foreclosures.
She may go back down to her purchase price, no completely new rennovations made?
even cheaper, she was way overpriced... typical realtor Edited by mikes2nd 2014-07-25 10:56 AM

| There is a small neighborhood of mid-century-modern homes here in Columbus, OH. They were built in the early 1960s by one of Frank Lloyd Wright's acolytes. I toyed with buying one a few years back, but it was more than I wanted to spend.

Sorry, but I do believe the true MCM homes are like the ones posted by Conelrad. The plain tasteless creations of modern day posted in this thread don't really fit the bill, IMO.
If a house is past 1970, one is pushing the definition of "mid-century" a bit too much. |

Location: bishop, ca | The "Plain tasteless creations of modern day" are nothing more than versions of Danny's beautiful Neutra-designed house, above.
Squared walls with open floor plans.
Perfect illustration-example, Danny.
..And, they are squared off, because that design allows for maximization of area, with maximized strength, but with
minimalized construction-materials weight.
Not everybody can afford a 'name' designer, or has the space for one of their houses to be built on their lot.
Mid Century design, or Mid Century construction?
Probably very few people would prefer the appearance of this house, over that of Neutra's, but it is, still Mid Century
Modern in design.
Are modern Hot Rods still considered to be Forwardlookers, if their only vintage component is their sheet metals' appearance?

Location: bishop, ca | I won't (can't) try to 'catch' anyone, into hating these MODERN houses' designs, because they "are not real"
MCM designs, but, guess what...they are MCM designs.
If they happened to have 2014 cars parked in front of them, what would y'all have to say about their inclusion
on this thread?
Yeah, you can call them fugly (or not), but they are all MCM, and are presented in Julius Shulman's "Modernism
Revisited" book, that is featured earlier on this thread...
I call them 'Time-Less' designs (and you would, too, if you had thought them to have been, merely, recently built
rip-offs of MCM, and not actual MCM originals).
...And, the second one is TIKI design, apparently!

Location: DFW, TX | Unfortunately, this one slipped away from us. We had our search 'ceiling' at 300k and this one was listed at $322k. I actually spotted the For Sale sign in front of this house during a drive.
We got a back-up offer in place within a day, but the people who had made the initial offer finally had their financing come through. I was pretty bummed.
You just don't see a lot of palm trees in Texas. If you look past the terrible colors and decoration, you will see a rather spectacular MCM house, and right in the middle of south Dallas.

First is another reference to the Koenig Stahl House, which has been featured many previous times in
articles and in movies; ho hum...
The second one is a photo-article about a couple guys, from KC and SC, who happen to be enamored of,
and have restored, six MCM housing designs, since 2000.
This beauty resides in Palm Springs (imagine that), and is a Donald Wexler creation.
As the article says: "Aah, comfort".

We were also told they broke up beautiful terrazzo floors to install that godawful remodel tile.
Really.

Location: bishop, ca | LOL---not; I was wondering about that floor tile not really conforming to the house's MCM construction-design.
Very expensive to remove and replace, especially on a raised-perimeter-foundation with wooden subfloors, but, for the house's
value appreciation, its replacement with something MCM appropriate would be very cost effective.
At its $322K purchase price, the house would appear to be fairly valued, as-is....but, as always: location-location-location.
Do you know what kind of wood flooring appears in the above photos?
Kinda looks like Bamboo...which 'wood' be appropriate for MCM; I like that flooring's appearance, even though it definitely
does not compliment two-out-of-three rooms' painting.

Location: bishop, ca | So, there I was, minding my own business at a local coffee shop, when the cover of Pasadena Magazine caught my eye.
The issue also shows an outstanding (in its yard) MCM style new design (WITH a 3-car garage; and with the capability for a 4th one, too).
Finally, there's an attractive spendy residence that some baseball player just bought.

Location: DFW, TX | The hunt is over! We close on this house on Oct 7.
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3112-Carnation-Ave-Fort-Worth-TX-...
It is in an "up and coming" area but the house itself is really interesting. It was built in '62 by the architect to be his own home. It's kind of small at only 1725 sf, but the construction details are so cool we couldn't pass it up. It's not quite Neutra modern, but it's squarely in the Louis Kahn vein (google Fisher House).
The price is unreal. Our agent is a "mid century modern specialist" and he said in the right part of Dallas, he would list it at over 1MM. We just got the appraisal back, and it looks like we're going to start off with a nice chunk of equity in it. We're very excited.
Some notes from the seller:
House:
• One of a kind modern 2 story salt box with Bauhaus architectural inspirations
• custom built in 1962 by an architect to be his home
• single owner until purchased in 2008
• one of a kind California redwood siding
• 1 inch tile squares in kitchen and bath
• south side has six sliding glass doors to brighten interior, while allowing access to upstairs balcony from each bedroom
• custom concrete flooring on ground level designed by local concrete staining artist
• spiral staircase with original shag carpeting step plates
• bamboo flooring on 2nd floor landing installed in 2010
• original pine planking flooring in upstairs bedrooms restored in 2010
• new garage roof installed in 2013
• hot water heater and air conditioning unit less than 15 years old
• gas heat with gas heated dryer option
• wireless alarm system
Lot:
• huge space shaded by 18 old grown live oaks, pecan and spruce trees (one tree estimated to be over 500 years old)
• koi pond casts beautiful shadows across living room
• contains 3 garden plots, a greenhouse and work shed
• backyard ringed by a 6' cedar fence built in 2009

57burb! I just noticed your post regarding your purchase of that Fabulous, MDM Style house! Congratulations!
I really wish that we could have found a MCM house when we were house-hunting, but alas...
You are SO in luck, as MCM Style furnishings now abound in the furniture stores, and you won't have any trouble filling your wonderful, new home with all of the MCM treasures that your heart desires...even a new ceiling fan.
LOVE the curb appeal, the custom concrete floors, the square door pulls in the bathroom & kitchen, the MCM "amoeba" tiles that can be seen reflected in the bathroom mirror, the little pond, and the way light bounces around the house!
I also have the same front door! I like it a lot...but I don't have a MCM Style house. Methinks that the house used to have a real MCM Style, custom front door that more matched the interior doors, and that someone has since run away with the original door. The door that is currently on the house is a Craftsman Style door, as I am sure you know already in view of your great appreciation and knowledge regarding MCM Style architecture...it's a great door, just not the ideal door for your incredible new home. Anyway, I know you have bigger concerns at the moment, dealing with the purchase of a new home, moving, etc... Enjoy your GREAT new home!
I am pea green with envy!

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | This house is in my town, Victoria, BC Canada. It was designed in 1957 by a friend of our family ( passed in 2005) . Today it was in the local newspaper, listed in the Top Ten of Greater Victoria's best heritage homes. Heritage Register Rockland 1646 St. Francis Wood Thomson House Built 1957 Heritage-Designated 2002 For: Walter & Mary Thomson Architect: John A. Di Castri ARCHITECTURE: Although a good number of very interesting modern houses are evident throughout Greater Victoria, the City of Victoria proper, largely built up by the 1940s, has only a handful of distinctive post-war houses. These are all the more valuable for their rarity. Sited on a rocky knoll at the end of St Francis Wood at the east end of Rockland, this home is arguably one of the finest post-and-beam, West Coast-style houses in the area, and is of interest for students of regional architectural design. Built in 1957, this residence presents an innovative display of structural expression. A reinforced concrete foundation core is anchored to the rock, while a heavy glue-lam beam system projects out forcefully from the house, with the thrusting outer spans of the beams supported on steel pipe columns. The floor and roof decks are fashioned from a 3X8 tongue & groove system. The form of this unique structure is arrayed in a spiraling asymmetry, with dramatic overhangs of beams and decks. Windows are large panels of plate glass with mitered corners, which act to emphasize the free-form, floating appearance. Set into a grove of mature Garry Oak trees, the house itself is a kind of abstract architectonic tree.* John A. Di Castri (1924-2005) was a highly individualistic architect. Hired at the age of 16 as an apprentice at the Department of Public Works, he received his education by correspondence. At the age of 25, after a brief stint in the office of Birley, Wade & Stockdill, he left Victoria to study at the University of Oklahoma under Bruce Goff, Frank Lloyd Wright’s maverick protégé. He returned to Victoria in 1951, and throughout his career remained dedicated to expanding his interpretations of Wrightian forms and was a key figure in establishing modern architecture in his relatively small and conservative native city.** Although there are many good examples of Di Castri’s dependably creative residential projects throughout Greater Victoria, there are actually only three or four other Di Castri house designs within City of Victoria limits. The Thomson House is probably the most visible and prominent. In 2002 this became the first post-1950 house to be designated in the City of Victoria.

Location: Parts Unknown | Some peoples' interest in old cars is singularly dimensional .... they only "connect"
with the cars. For others, the cars are just part of a larger picture that involves every-
thing from a particular era. Architecture, clothing, music, TV and movies, street hardware,
lighting, you-name-it.
I find it odd that some seem unable to just pass over the indulgences of others and
feel compelled to b!tch about it. As of posts objecting to, complaining, or arguing about
what others are discussing makes good reading or improves the overall quality of the
forum !
Pretty simple really. Don't like abortion ? Don't have one ! Not interested in Mid-Century
archtecture and furniture ? Don't look at that thread !
This seems like a no brainer, my friends. |
