Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Location: .Norfolk..Mafia.. ,England UK | POSTED FOR NEIL D500..... If we had a "Forwardlook Lifestyle" message board (another abject plea, herewith!), this thread could have been placed there. In the L.A. Times, of WED 9/1/10, there is a real estate article about the new owner of this 1951 John Lautner designed house deciding to demolish this Beverly Hills house, so that he could build some other residence on the property. The existing residence is (still-) known as The Shusett House, but, not for long, as its razing has been approved by the City of Bev-Hills. This house was one of Lautner's earliest commissions. Relocating the house was proposed, but was not agreed-to by the house's new owner. The article concludes with the Executive Director of the L.A. Conservancy eulogizing : " We hope that this is a wake-up call that there are significant architectural resources here that are worth preserving." Expert Posts: 3588 Location: Plymouth Spaceport | that's a shame! It should be considered a crime for people to even own a home like that since they don't appreciate it. There have been a lot of other buildings designed by famed architects torn down in the name of "progress" Atomic Ranch magazine did a writeup on John Lautners work, along with Eichler,Neutra, etc. I agree,a forward look lifestyle area would be great since many of us also share a passion for other '50's,60's forward look era cultural artifacts. At any rate we should probably curtail this discussion lest we be reminded it isn't "forward look" related. forwardlook.net/forums/images/emoticons/wink.gif'> Edited by 1960DesotoAdventurer 2010-09-07 1:42 AM

As this house was designed/built in 1951, it clearly was an influence on the Space Age design of our cars. A person who couldn't afford such a "Mid Century Moderne" style house could easily afford to buy into the ethos, by buying a FWDLK-ing car. In fact...somewhere, I've got a photo of a 57 CRL D500 (seen from the rear) parked in a carport (now where did THAT term originate?) of a similar flat roofed M.C.M. house--think that it was published in Life magazine.

Expert Posts: 3588 Location: Plymouth Spaceport | Yes, I completely agree, It is a forward look house! Wish I lived there and had my forward looks in the space-port...er,carport!....and since we're wishing maybe my nextdoor neighbor can be Anita Ekberg like in "Hollywood or Bust" and my other neighbor on the opposite side can be the girl from that DeSoto poster! LOL! Might as well dream big, huh!? I've always loved mid century modern design, homes, coffee shops, stores, bowling alleys and especially movie theatres. I always carry a camera so when I see a cool old theatre, bowling alley, house, etc I could at least save a picture of it before it was altered or torn down. Most of the really wild '50's buildings here are long gone now, even a shopping center built in 1959 and a park built in 1958 that had a giant metal rocketship and modernistic cowboys and Indians for kids to climb on were razed to make way for the plastic preschool looking playground equipment of today. I really like your idea about a "forward look lifestyle" section. It would be nice to have an area where members can discuss 1950's-1960's culture, music, movies, architecture, products, actresses, etc. Edited by 1960DesotoAdventurer 2010-09-06 6:27 PM

We had a wild "googie" style restaraunt that used to be a Sambos,it had a wavy roof and even the original Seeburg Hf100r juke still in use up until the late 70's,then it got passed from hand to hand, now it's been "renovated" again and is a Mexican seafood joint. The new owners actually took down all the original flying saucer lamps and pitched them into the dumpster! I saved two of them, the rest were crushed and bent up to make more room in the trash. There are two books (with the second being a 'revision'/addition to the first one) : "Googie Coffee Shop Architecture" or some-such title (at my home)... Googie was the name of the first coffee shop which happened to be designed by Lautner (now, there's a memory-stretch!) in the Hollywood/L.A. area.

Expert Posts: 3588 Location: Plymouth Spaceport | I have that Googie book by Alan Hess and have seen the "redux" (revised edition) it's a great book. "Populuxe" by Thomas Hine is another must have book for anyone interested in mid century design, the author even discusses the Forward Look and states regarding the 1957 Plymouth that Chrysler was trying to sell Marylin Monroe as a housewife because the cars were so accessable but incredibly beautiful with dream car styling! You could be of modest means and still have big money style and glamour! Edited by 1960DesotoAdventurer 2010-09-06 8:11 PM

Expert Posts: 1480 Location: Australia | i am always surprised (prehaps not surprised, but dumfounded) at the lack of knowledge people have about our favourite 50's and 60's items... like throwing away flying saucer lights, do they not think someone else might like them? or prehaps try and sell them... i am forever rescuing fabulous vintage furniture from the curb side (which is actually illegal here), items that people would pay good money for, just sitting there waiting for the council to take them to the dump... i shudder to think of the items that have met this demise that i have been unable to rescue or that have been put out on the other side of town... also the amount of people who 'give me things' because they know i like old things, that they were going to just toss out... people crave these items, and the people who have them just toss them out, it drives me insane... same as the house above, most of us would only dream of living in such a place, whilst the owner obviously has no liking for it whatsoever, and is going to demolish it... it saddens me greatly... there is a fabulous californian style house down near the beach which is my dream house... i drove past late last year, and saw that the whole back was missing, i stopped my car (without pulling over) and ran towards it... the next door neighbour happened to be watering his lawn (which is naughty as we have water restrictions in place) and asked me, can i help you? i tried to get my words out to ask him what on earth they were doing to 'my' house, i thought it was being demolished (and thoughts of chaining myself to this divine house were running through my head) it ended up just being storm damaged of which they were repairing... the next door neighbour clearly thought i was unstable and insane to be so concerned about someone elses old house... but for many years i have driven past that house dreaming of living there as it is such a fabulous vintage style... i guess people will never understand or comprehend peoples love for all things 50's and 60's, to them it is just out of date old stuff... adriana forwardlook.net/forums/images/emoticons/smile.gif'> (P1070871.jpg) (P1140212.jpg) Attachments ---------------- P1070871.jpg (126KB - 117 downloads) P1140212.jpg (125KB - 112 downloads)

Location: Parts Unknown | My dear girl, get a hold of yourself ! forwardlook.net/forums/images/emoticons/surprise.gif'> "Sanity" is defined by the average. You are far from average, and therefore, by definition, "insane". Of course, this is the pot calling the kettle "black", but the sooner we come to grips with being a little "whacked", the better we deal with it. Imagine a time when those people you say "crave" this old stuff did not exist and EVERYONE thought it was evil and ugly ! Because to hear you rave about it makes me think you don't know how good you have it .... we ALL have it ! In 1980, guys like me stood alone .... total "lunatics" in a world that thought polyester suits and split level homes were "bitchin'". Today, we have all sorts of people that appreciate this stuff like you and I do. Be not ashamed. Stand proud and proclaim as I, "I am a looney and dammed proud of it!" Welcome to the team. forwardlook.net/forums/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Ok: "The Good Life", personified. "Populuxe" starts out its second chapter, entitled :"The Luckiest Generation" (sorry everybody else!!), by saying; " 'Never before', Life exclaimed in a 1954 article, "So much for so few". The article was accompanied by photographs of such novel phenomena as crowded student parking lots at a high school. It told of young men just out of college or the service who had their pick of excellent, high-paying jobs that would more than fulfill their parents' dreams for them." 'Never before' was virtually the slogan of the age [not "Forwardlooking???]. Never before had there been a car like this one or a floor wax like that one. The Populuxe generation heard of precedent being shattered several times each day. "

Location: Parts Unknown | d500neil - 2010-09-08 11:57 AM Brent, I thought that you were buying/restoring a Mid Century Moderne house...or was 'that', only dreaming of doing that? ******************************************* The DLI and I came very close to buying a crazy George Jetson house, but we could not get our place sold fast enough. The owners put it back on the market again after we bought our current place (we also owned the house next door), and in the scramble to buy it again we put both up for sale. We only needed to sell one to really pull it off smoothly. The 3rd party through our old place bought it, and we immediately called the seller's agent to seal the deal, .... it had sold THAT morning ! forwardlook.net/forums/images/emoticons/frown.gif'> So, with tears in our eyes, we decided to build where we are and the new shop and house (seen in the PNW forum) is where we are now. I toyed with the idea of detailing the new place in a mid-century modern motif, but decided to stick with a vernacular Victorian theme to better suit my other interests that would not go well with a Googie building.
