| OK just got my '56 fired back up after the fuel pump and carb issue. Now a strange tiny bit major problem and no idea as to what.
Well release the park park brake put in drive, it's like standing on the brake pedal trying to do a burn out. Put in reverse same thing. Jack up the rear end and rear tires turn free, with or without the park brake pulled out. I think it needs some adjusting. Raise up front end tires turn fine. And both back wheels turn either direction with no binding.
Set it back down and same thing. It's like the drive line drum brake almost has a mind of it's own. It will hold tight then going from neutral to gears it will go free for a bit, then locks back up. And what I mean by a bit is an inch or 2.
I have no idea as to what or where to look for the problem. Anyone got any ideas I would appreciate it. I don't know if the brakes are locking up or the drive line.
Any help please. |

Sounds like either a transmission problem or something to do with the eBrake.
I started a thread on adjusting the internal shoe drum-type eBrake that might help you:

YMMV:

| Just went out and fired it up again. Same thing. Hold foot on brake it will go into either forward or reverse. Give a little gas and it is locked up. Checked trans fluid nice n red and at full in neutral idling. I'm wondering if something might have broke or stuck in the drive line drum. The FSM is about as clear as mud on the thing. |

If both rear wheels are elevated, the tires will turn even with a locked up driveline because of the open differential.
With the engine off and the parking brake handle released, can you push the car? If not, the parking brake is the problem. |

| Ok duh here. I forgot about open dif and yep tires will turn. In neutral it will move. I backed it out of my garage when this gremlin came to life and it froze solid. I eventually got it to free up to drive it back in. It does not act like it's stuck between drive and reverse. It wants to go which ever direction is pushed. It is freezing cold here now and my garage isn't heated. But I have a feeling it's the drive shaft drum. Hopefully some heat and a hammer will free it up. |

| Little update. Just got the front up and on stands. Ok I can turn the drive shaft going forward fairly easily and don't hear any dragging, scuffing or anything and the tires are rolling. Going backwards a tad harder but can turn the shaft and tires turn. Totally lost now as it is as it was. I got new wheel cylinders coming for it early next week. Get them in and reckon will fire it up on stands and see what happens. I swear every square inch under this thing seems to have something attached to it. I think I can rule out a busted park cable but not sure yet. |

| Ok now I wonder if this thing fixed itself. Up on all 4, all four tires off. Ok fired it up, let it warm up a little, pushed in D and yep showing going to 10 mph idiling. Brakes, reverse nice smooth engagement. Limited slip doing what it should. Got wife to watch hubs turning. Went to D, both spin. Went to R, left side little gas right side came in. D again RR turn LR nope. R again, LR turn, RR nope. Back to N, D again LR turn RR nope, R opposite of before. When both not turning a little gas encourages them to come to the party. Now watch I get the new wheel cylinders put in and the gas tank will fall out or something. |

| Welp I found the problem. And yeppers it was the drive shaft drum. The actuator arm was getting hung up on the shoe backing. My park adjustment was a bit too far, I was closer to the 5" between the 3-5" travel. At any rate all new wheel cylinders after all these years, nothing wrong with the originals. Flushed the entire system out with about a quart of fluid. Got the stupid little pain in hind quarters never wants to seal up tight MC side holding pot sealed. Pedal up nice n solid and axles spin free as a naked jay bird. |
