I had to get a ring gear replaced on a 61 torqueflite. The people the converter was sent to wound up replacing it with a whole new rebuilt converter. My question is this. The old converter had a sleeve that came out and I still have it, I did not give it to them with the converter. This sleeve has an O ring on it. The rebuilt converter I got back looks different where this sleeve would go. It does not appear to have a removable sleeve. Whatever this sleeve is seems to be built in to this converter. Before I try to install it I want to make sure this converter will work. Since I don't know much about cast iron torqueflites, I wanted to consult with some of you who know more about this than me.

The sleeve you're talking about is the front oil pump drive sleeve and all Cast Iron Torqueflites use this ......The Torque Converter in question must be equipped with eight studs comming out the front (which is normal for a CI TorqueFlite) it cannot have four mounting pads and should have a ring gear with 172 teeth....by the description of the Torque Converter Hub it sounds like they gave you a post '62 Converter . I just had one Custom Rebuilt for a '59 as nobody on the planet stocked them. Can you post a picture?

I bought a 61 Imperial last winter for the TF tranny and the torq converter. Someone else took the engine and tranny out for me in return for getting the rest of the car. I did not notice if there was a pump drive sleeve like my 56 powerflite- but did notice that the torque converter is different in the center hub. . Is my drive sleeve missing or does the 61's have a different set up? Can you use a 61 TF with an earlier converter?.......................MO

Generally its accepted that the interchangeability between convertors stays in the 1957 to '61 range, in as the front pump , drive sleeve, reaction shaft and input shaft are indentical ('57 used an aluminum reaction shaft but the splines etc.are identical to the steel one). Transmissions would probably work but the cable design changed in '60 ...button boxes all worked the same too.
Regettably I've never had a '56 Torqueflite in my hands so I can't say what differences exist specifically. My experience remains with'57 to present.

The Big blocks all used the drive sleeve in 61, as well as the cast iron TF trans case. There are slant 6 with the aluminum cased TF (in 61) that I am guessing would be the same as the 62 big blocks, which had the front pump drive as part of the TC.

I don't know this for sure, but will as soon as I get the slant 6 and trans out of my parts car.

All Cast Iron Torqueflites used the separate drive sleeve up to the end of '61 and the first Aluminum Torqueflite (A-904) was released in '60 with the Slant Six
it used a conventional flex plate between the crank flange and convertor and had the front pump drive as part of the convertor assembly, that pretty well became the normal deal startingwith the intro of the A-727 in '62.

Ok the new converter does have 172 teeth and there are 8 studs. The sleeve only goes in about an inch but I guess thats right because it all fit together when I slid it on the tranny. I've only removed 1 other CI TF and the sleeve stayed on the transmission that time. When I pulled this transmission the sleeve stayed in the torque converter. So this is why I was confused as I never saw this sleeve before and I thought by looking at it it was supposed to go all the way into the converter.

Will a 56 powerflite torque converter( non cooling fins) work with a 61 torquflight tranny? If so, do you use the powerflite pump drive sleeve or the Torquflite pump drive sleeve?.....................MO
