Regular Posts: 89 | Refers to street parking the car parallel to the sidewalk curb, aka in a row/ line/ que. This is the norm on this side of the pond for street parking. Also, unlike Europe it is almost always forbidden to put part of the car on the sidewalk - stay completely on the road surface. Most of the images of center city streets in the "forward Look in Old Postcards" show cars parallel parked. Mark

Location: Parts Unknown | Parallel parking is much easier to do with a finned car, as you can see the rear corners of the car. It is also a good excuse for driving a ragtop ..... much better visibility with the top down.

I thought I had that covered with the 'easy'-part... I have shoved away a diesel Van once which was arrogantly parked on 2 spaces. The Van was obviously in gear as I felt the cylinder compressions of it's motor. But, this was done with my '78 Pontiac Bonneville years ago so it doesn't really count I think...

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Anybody ever smacked a power-pole, or some other post-like-protuberance, installed (too-) close to the Kerb, while backing into a parallel parking spot, with a long-overhanging Olde car's rear end? And, for general amazement, notice how absolutely closely cars used to parallel park, to each other, as seen in various of the "Old Car Postcards" thread's images ! Dunno how they ever got into, or out of, those tight spots. Edited by d500neil 2010-01-02 5:10 PM

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | You can leave the close parking to your 'friendly' ignorant neighbors usually. I mowed down a parkingmeter once with my '67 Newport when I went parallel parking and driving into the spot front first. The '67 Chryslers have these nice protrusions on the sides, great for 'hooking' and taking down weak poles.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Yeah, well, we've got a wooden power pole that's installed just-off-of the kerb (curb, in American), across from our post office, that is a real car-eater--kind of like C. Brown's Kite-eating tree.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | I've parked parallel with the Saratoga lots of times since I bought it, but these days you have to find a meter space that's actually long enough to get the car in. In this city they have shortened most of the metered parking spaces to reflect the small size of today's cars. They have also put in a bunch of metered spaces that will only fit "Smart Car" sized vehicles or motor bikes.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Neil, I'm glad you clarified the word "Curb / Kerb" .... in Canada we also spell it "Curb". Our Canadian spelling is a conglomeration of US and British English.
