Location: Cochrane, Alberta | I am about to pull the engine/powerflite tranny out of my 56 dodge to refresh the engine. The tranny has been operating perfectly, but being that I have it out of the car I was going to at least do a gasket/seal kit on it.
My question is, should I do the full rebuild with the clutch pack etc. now that its out, or in your guys' experience if it is operating fine should I leave it alone and just to the seal/gasket kit? |

Rule #1: If it is not broken ---- don't "fix it".
Because of time and where a transmission is ---- they get dirty. Clean the complete unit.
If a Seal is "weeping" or leaking ---change it.
Do fully drain the fluid and refill.

Can anyone give me a brief rundown on pulling the tranny with the engine? My shop manual starts its info when you have the engine and tranny are out assuming you know the tricks of the trade to get them out. Other than disconnecting the shift linkage and speedo cable, is there anything else on these to worry about? Do I have to remove the rear crossmember from the car and the tranny before removal, or just separate the tranny from the cross member and leave it in the car?
Any tips would be appreciated before I pull the engine and tranny unit on my 56 |

Rebuild it while it is out.... Best way to do it in my opinion... Agreed, who knows what is going on inside and if it was ever done, it's out great time to do it. |
