Location: milano, italy | Trying to fix some more wrong stuff in my 58 Belvedere conv. The power steering box that came originally with the car has been swapped for a manual one. I want to return back to original, and want a rebuilt box. What is the correct thing to do? Buy a junkyard part and have Lares engineering repair it, or maybe they have unit already done?
What about the steering column? Is same for manual steering and power steering? Thank you |

Location: Montreal, Canada | I have learned a lot about power steering in 58 Plymouths the hard way last year with my car..
If I were in your situation, I would buy a reconditionned gear box from one of the resellers. I got mine from « buyautoparts », and am really satisfied, but other places might offer to sell them outright :

I had an old one to send as a core to get a partial refund, but they would sell outright if you do not have a core.
But, assuming you already have the obvious parts for a PS car (pump and mounting bracket, the correct pulley assembly for the pump belt) you have to know that almost everything else is different and has to be changed in order to make a conversion (or a re-conversion) from a manual steering car to power steering :
- The shaft is different and unique to PS (Plymouth or Dodge 1958-59 would fit)
- The column is different and unique to PS (Plymouth or Dodge 1958-59 would fit)
- You need the rubber bushing that goes between the end of the shaft into the gear box (gary goers sells them)
- Turn signal switch assembly is different and unique to PS cars (because of the horn)
- You would also need the brass horn contact ring and turn signal return ring that are unique to PS cars and have to be mounted to the rear of the steering wheel center
- You will also need the wedge-shaped shim for centering the column
- oh, and I believe the pitman arm is different too..

the two systems do, generally, physically, resemble each other.
Can't remember 'why', right now, but, such is the case.
