and she fires up like she usually does. 1 min of cranking and pumping the gas pedal about 15 times and she finally fires.

I let it run for about 15 minutes to let her get good and warm and then shut it down.

Now as I am disconnecting the battery and ready to close the hood I notice a lot of 'smoke' coming out of the oil breather. A lot is a relative term really... lets say it is more than I remember seeing. Is this moisture burn off coming out of my oil?

Thoughts anyone?

Or blow by from old worn out rings.

Is your car drive-able ? If so, take it around the block and see if that solves the problem.

On a related note, why does your car require '1 min of cranking and pumping the gas pedal about 15 times' ? It should be two pumps of gas pedal (once to close the choke; once to give it a shot of gas), followed by maybe 5 - 8 seconds of cranking before it starts. Even if it's been sitting for a month. If it takes any longer, there are other issues you need to address (fuel pump, carb, tune up, missing fuel filter, bad gas).

He said the first time this year... I am assuming it had a good 4-6 months of sitting.

My '58 sat from Nov - early March. Yet it met the benchmark I mentioned in my post.

Possibly moisture, but more than likely, alot of unburned fuel from running rich and blowby..Personaly, I don't see what the big deal is with the slight "Smoke" coming from the breather area. unless your running total seal rings, your gonna have a certain amount of blowby..This is why most cars were converted to PCV systems in the early 70's out in California..The engine will run fine. I've even seen some who thought the Head gaskets were blown when they removed the oil cap from older as well as newer cars and saw the condensation buildup under the oil cap....

Penance is running an original... unrebuilt, 1955 301 poly with 52000 miles on it. The previous owner added a 4bl intake and Carter carb from an imperial to it. She leaks like a siv... Hence the reason I am building a new engine to go in the car. (don't worry I won't get rid of the poly)

She runs pretty good but she is hard to start, always has been. Runs pretty good when running. Responsive, no hesitation. Pretty freakin amazing considering how old it is really.

I did a compression check last year and the cylinders varied from 70 - 135. Noticably lower compression in the center pistons than the outer edge. She leaks oil down the block from the heads and transmission fluid from the front of the trans. I chaulked this up to leaky head gaskets and resigned myself to a full engine rebuild. But worried that the antifreeze is getting into the oil somehow. I don't see anything on the dip stick or in the radiator to indicate that though.

With that much sitting/down time, I'm amazed it doesn't steam/smoke more out the breather. That meant the car was sitting for a long time. Plus, the compression pressures are all over the place.
Those are most likely the cylinders that are giving the most smoke...
