Is there some trick to removing the master cylinder cap on a car with power brakes?

On my '58 Chrysler the bellows are right on top of the cap....it's very tough to fit a wrench in there, much less remove the cap and get it back on. Is this just a 'struggle with it' thing?

Start the car and have an assistant put their foot on the brake, this will retract the rubber bellows and make it a lot easier.
Bad design all the same. I hope the guy who designed this system at Chrysler got the sack!
Glenn.

You should try it on a '60 model with longrams installed on the engine

I tried using a long stick to push the bellows back and it does go back but there isn't much more clearance, if any.

My concern is that when I try to get the car inspected they will give me a hard time as they are supposed to check the fluid level. So even if I check it, that doesn't help. Maybe I need to use the 1980's trick of leaving a 12 pack of beer on the passenger seat.

Bs. Why should they give YOU a hard time about the design of a car's braking system? You didn't design it like this did you?
And how about all the other FL's which have been checked before?

My guess is the yahoo's that work there have never seen a car older than they are, which is 1992.

Worse, they could try to check it and screw something up.

Well.....I'm pleased to report the Chrysler passed state inspection today with no trouble. I carefully chose the station based on past experience. The inspector didn't even look at the master cylinder.

In fact, when I handed the car over to him and started to explain the pushbutton transmission he cut me off and said he didn't even want to drive the car! Said he didn't know how to drive a PB trans car and didn't care to try. So he had me drive it while he watched me apply the brakes. Highly non-conforming with state law but I wasn't complaining.

This was the first time I drove the car over 20 MPH and let's say it needs a lot of work before it comes close to my 60's C body Mopars. Lots of shaking and a generally rough ride. Then, I don't think any portion of the suspension has been touched since 1958 except the shocks.
