Hello all,
You may not remember me, but I've been here off and on for awhile.
First off, never let your car sit somewhere like a bodyshop.
The shop switched management without telling me and it cost
me a grand to get it back from them. That being said, I have my
'58 Belvedere 2 dr hrdtp home safe again and am starting some work to it.
Anyone know who does decent re-chroming in or around Hickory, NC, or Charlotte, NC?
I also need a source for the stainless trim repair, and interior in general.

Thanks in advance,

Steven DeCanio

I'm glad that you got your car back, even though you had to pay through the nose to get it. Could've been worse, I've heard of unscrupulous people running a lien sale and selling the car before the owner had a chance to do something about it. It is always a good idea to constantly check on the progress of your car to avoid these types of incidents. ---John

Hi John,

Yeah, you see, this was a local Maaco. The guy there told me I could keep the car there as long as needed. They did ZERO work on it. Nothing. Then the guy left and the new management put a mechanics' lien on it, or so they said. Then they wanted over $3,500 in back storage!!! I was ready to pull in there with a tow truck and a shotgun. No one will one stealing my fins after looking all these years for a solid car. By the way, there are about a dozen or so cars back there with the same fate, a few cool ones. The old manager should have called me and these people. You can't trust anyone these days. Take care.

The friendlier the deal it's often the worse the outcome...

I did a deal with a head man once, gave him free advertising in a publication I did in return for head work. When it was time to claim my part, he charged me full price!

Proves you need to get these things in writing.

Always get any non-standard deal in writing. It helps. Also, in retrospect, for $1000, you could have bought all the tools, and taken a night course at the local Vo Tech, and done the work yourself. At least you got your car back.

Hello Casey,
I actually found the Belverdere in Montana - cost $1,400 to ship from there a few years back.
So- after the purchase price of $2,500, then $1,400 to ship - then another $1,000 dollar bodyshop ransom, plus 90 or so in tows, I can finally actually start inproving the darn thing. heh heh -

Maybe you'll see my '57 Savoy on the road some day.

Cool to see someone else in Hickory. Did you ever see my red four door '58 Savoy sedan rolling around? I drove it quite a bit between a year and two years ago before I parked it. Keep me up on your progress. Maybe we can cruise sometime. They have a neat little car show every Friday night at Myra's in Valdese.

No, I can't say that I've ever seen any red Savoys running around.

As for the interior of your Belvedere (I need one of those )

You can try Original Auto Interiors http://www.originalauto.com/

I'm not sure of their service but they did have an exact match of my '57 cloth. I'm waiting to recieve a sample to compare with my interior.

What color is your Belvedere by the way?

Hey, Guys,

I live in NC, too, in a little place called Nebo outside of Marion. It's about halfway between Hickory and Asheville. I am new to the board and had no clue that there were so many members in NC. Maybe we should start an NC (or Carolinas) FL region?

My FL is a white '61 Newport 4-door hardtop with a Flightsweep rear deck (I just tell "civilians" it's a Continental kit to keep it simple) which I have owned since '99. Found it less than ten miles from my house.

That's a shame about your body shop experience, Steven. Yours is a story which I hear time and again involving all sorts of old cars -- unfortunately. I referred a guy with a '62 300H to a Maaco shop once -- it turned out to be a disaster for everybody involved, myself included.

A lot of guys in our local Mopar club take the body shop program at the local technical college when they want to restore their cars; it gives them access to all of the college's facilities for just the cost of the course, plus they develop a new skill. Could this work for you?

Hi Guys - well to answer some questions. My Belevedere was originally metallic coral, which is like a fawn/rose color. My girlfiend likes the original color but I will be going with a Viper or Ram red. Possibly an F-150 red. Toreador is too orange for me. Hope I don't offend any toreador red cars, nice color, just not for me. My 4 door Savoy was a fire chief's car and was originally a fire engine red and that looks good too. As for an FL-NC club chapter. Cool, let's do that. I know of another 1958 Belevedere convertible - Black and gorgeous and another guy has a '61 300 that's beautiful too. He lives near Valley Hills mall. As far as my planned interior. I guess I need to go custom becuase as much as I like Christine, I am taking liberties and going with a white w red inserts route, like my fire chief car. I am also going from 14" rims to 15". I have the rims already . They are 15" and very wide. And yes, they fit my four door already with no real problems other than you need to deflate the rear tire to install on car.

Let's all stay forward and keep in touch. Any FL-NC "members" heading to Tulsa?

Forgot to mention. We have CVCC school here near the Hickory Speedway. They have a NASCAR course so they must have a bodyshop course. Need to look into that. My car doesn't run yet though, that may be a problem. My other option, I have a buddy that does great paint and body and he's been after my '70 Chevelle (which I inherited) for years and I'm starting to go hmmmmm... years ago he painted my '72 Plymouth and it came out great. I traded a Chubby 454 I acquired for that job.

Steven,

Sounds like your Belv will be a real treat to the eye when finished. I suppsoe that you are aware of both Gary Goers and Jeff Carter and just how indespesible they are when you own cars like this. I have also bought stuff from Murray Park.

I have actually met Dennis in Hickory with the white '61 300 once. He lives on the road which goes down past Home Depot and Pesmart, and I may know that black '58 ragtop, too. If it's the same car I recall from several years ago, an older fella with a ponytail from down around Charlotte (I forget his name) owned it at the time along with some other '50s cruisers. He didn't know how to restore the shiny waffle-pattern interior door panel inserts, so I suggested using some Bare Metal Foil from the model car hobby supply places.

I just realized: my avatar doen't look so hot. Anybody have a suggestion about how to get a digital photo not to look like you took it through a screen door?

Jeff,
I was aware of Gary Goers but not the other guys. What are their contact numbers? As far as Dennis, yup that's him. He also has a sweet '69 Charger R/T and a nice '79 300, the kind that looks like a Cordoba. I had a triple black '78 Cordoba once. 400 engine, huge power moonroof, and a factory tach !!! hmmmm, your avatar doen't look too bad to me. It is about the same file size as mine. oh, and I looked up Nebo. Only about 37 or so miles from here. You going to Tulsa? -

Not sure if that was the same '58 Belv ragtop. I was driving my Savoy and I was chased down one day by this guy who said he inherited one. Talked my ear off about how nice the convertible he has is, but I've never seen it. I'm still looking for his number, but I moved since then.

Steven,

I PM'd you right back.

No, I'm not going to Tulsa but I wish I could. I have been aware of the time-capsule '57 for about eight years; I read about it in a book of Plymouth history (I forget the title).

Instead, I am debating on wheter to go to the WPC/Imparial Club meet and tour in Chattanooga May 26 - 28. You can read about this event on the Imparial Club website (www.imperialclub.com -- I think), or maybe they have it posted here. We'd be taking our '71 300, though, not the '61

The e-mail for JC Auto Restorations is jcauto@eskimo.com, Phone 425-672-8324 in Lynnwodd, WA. He doen't have a catalog, and I'm not sure about a website.

Gary Goers you will probably never get on the phone (but it's 406-752-6249 just in case), and he doesn't list an e-mail or a website. Best to mail him $4.00 for his current catalog at 37 Amdahl Lane, Kalispell, MT 59901. Gary tells everybody to send him a description of their car and what they THINK they need along with the appropriate funds, and he will send you what you REALLY need along with a bill (or a refund) for the balance. This has worked for me.

Stephen, welcome aboard~!!

Glad to see another NC person! I'm in Durham, but have folks down Concord way, not too far from ya. If you're ever at the Lowe's Auto Fair, you've probably seen some of my cars there...
Can't wait to see that Plymouth!

Have a super day, advise if us NC folks can help ya out with anything...we'll dig around for ya.

Keep those fins flying!!

Take my '57? Drive it...probably not. Just the thought of a catostrophic failure between NC and Tulsa. Trailer it there, then drive....maybe.
