Picked up this gem this weekend. Sat on the ground without wheels for decades, but due to the excellent environment it sat in the underside is still as nice as the day it came off the assembly line. Power swivel seats, dash clock, p windows, pb, ps, tinted glass, dual exhaust. I missed out on one of these over 15 years ago, same color, and have wanted one ever since. Sadly, the two missing side trim pieces were on the ground but were trampled by the cattle. By trampled I mean absolutely destroyed...

Congratulations, 58 300D!

The good news is that you seem to have the rest of the trim in place, including the roof trim, trunk spears, rocker trim stainless/rear wheel rock guards, badges and such. It's impressive that these items haven't been lost to pickers through the years.

Nice acquisition!

Sweet car. I had one of those in the 1990s. She looks like she came in heavy from orbit.

I concur, great find. Any/every Desoto is worthy of resurrection, especially the top of the line model 2drht Forward Look models. This car, in any roadworthy form is a STATEMENT. Go for it 58 300D.

Amazing that the underside is still good after years that close to ground, must be very dry there?

Firedome, I couldn't believe it either. When I jacked it up off the ground, it looked as new. The gas tank looks like it's from a 2 year old car, and thankfully it was empty so it's not filled with gunk and rust.

What a bargain, looks dry bodywork, the 1959 model looks good.
And what a awesome view in the background. (Kansas?) That is how I would like to find an abandoned FL in

Nice car. The 1957 Buick is a pretty neat atomic age car as well.

Hey old wood, got any TOTO pee left over?? If I mixed it with my oatmeal in the AM I might have enough energy to crack the ice from in front of our front door. On second thought, let 'em come to the back door. No energy required here.

Doc, power steering, power brakes, day/nite mirror, power swivel seats, dash clock, power windows, tinted glass, front and rear bumper guards, rear quarter antenna, dual exhaust. Don't know what of these were optional and which were standard on the FireFlite, though.

I believe the dual exhaust was standard to the 4bbl Fireflite. The rest were options.

A very well optioned-up DeSoto. I am amazed at how many top-line Fireflites were
built rather spartanly. To find one with power windows and seat is very unusual, on a
car I would expect most to have.

Is the red paint we see original ? It seems odd to not have the insert painted the accent
color or have the aluminum inserts, especially on a top-line coupe like this.

Doc, the paint is original. The left front door has had a spot of work done to it in the past, but the rest is original. I was also wondering why there was nothing in the sweep moldings, as 99% of the ones you find on the net do.

I am not fully up to speed on 59's, but assume options and equipment is fairly close to the 58
offering, which I know a little bit about.

It would be unusual for a Fireflite to NOT have a color sweep. The sweep mouldings were standard
equipment, but I am not sure if the accent paint color was standard too.

For the 58 Spring Special package, silver-anodized aluminum inserts were offered (similar to the
commonly seen 58 Belvedere inserts, but with a fine horizontal pattern instead of the little squares).
This idea was available for all cars in 1959, but was not that popular. I have owned a few parts cars
with it, but most I see were painted with the accent color.

I would expect a loud red paint color to have more "loud" with a white sweep, but perhaps someone
thought it too garish and opted for just the roof in accent color ???

An odd build in that regard.

Doesn't look like fine horizontal pattern,

Correct. 58 had fine horizontal pattern. 59 got a coarse vertical pattern as you show.

Doc, maybe it's a Canadian car!

=================================================

For 59, the Canadian Fireflites used an imported hand-tooled faux silver body from Fiji
with Aztec lettering done in genuine turquoise as the sweep insert. Door panels were 60
Polara, dash was a right hand drive unit from a 56 Dodge, and interior fabrics were 1957
Nash. Make a note of it.

But we got it all cleared up before anyone got killed, right ? Mission accomplished !

BTW, 58 300D, the National DeSoto Club has an official "Technical Advisor" for the 1959 models. This very enthusiastic guy is a total guru for Desotos made that year. A modest dude, but he really does know pretty much everything about '59 DeSotos.

Not to take anything away from the very knowledgeable folks here at this site - just offering this as another source of info for you.

Just go to the NDC site and click on the menu for his addy if you're feeling into it.
