Can anyone list the trim differences between a 57 Dodge d-500 and a "regular" Cornet and Royal Lancer? I know there is the trunk lid badge, but I believe I read somewhere that there are other trim differences perhaps at grill and/or dash. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Rich

NAHHH, the ONLY difference between a righteous 1957 D500 & the non-D's , is the engine (bearing stamping-number : KD500-1xxxxx) with the red painted Hemi valve covers, and the special-brass-tag-coded carb, and the sprcial-coded distributor. The engine-guts (even the camshaft) is the same, for both models, and, I even-believe, that the dual 4-bbl Super-D500 shared the same mild-grind-camshft, as the 'other' models! The other difference is the D500 emblem, PLUS a 'secret' coding, on the Paint/Trim plate's stamped-numbers.

The D500 engine-option was available on EVERY car-model; even 2-door Surburban stationwagons (NOW: THAT would be NEAT, to find!) , & Coro 4-door sedans.

Then, of course, the sometimes-found-on-car Broadcast Sheet, AND, the factory's IBM Build Card will confirm a D500's provenance.

BTW, standard engines are stamped : KDS-1xxxxx ; sometimes, you will find Hemi heads, & a D500 emblem, installed on a "KDS" car!

I don't think that I was clear about the questions I asked. I wish to learn the differences (if any) between a 1957 Dodge Cornet and a 1957 Dodge Cornet D-500 in terms of trim. Are there differences other than the trunk lid badge? Same question for 57 Custom Royal compared to 57 Custom Royal D-500.
Thanks, Rich

AS far as I know Rich the only cosmetic diff. was the D-500 Badge on the trunk. If I'm correct in 1957 it was on the right hand side (pass) and in 1958 it was on the left side (drivers side). There was also a trim pice in 1957 that designated the Super Red Ram which was located in the same spot where the D-500 badge would be. This piece looked like a v with a lancer's head shield. The Super Red Ram was the 325 poly with a 4bbl and dual exhaust.

I could be in error but thats the way I think it is.

Interestingly, the trunk "V" emblem was ONLY installed on Royals & CRL's---NOT on any Coro (not, even, on their V/8 models! ).

The "V" emblem, therefore, connoted 'only' a Royal, or CRL model; nothing else!---of course, those models did NOT have a 6-cylinder engine available, BUT, the Coro's DID have a V/8 available, on them (BUT, they STILL did NOT have a trunk w/a "V" emblem on it).

Neil...

I have a distributor supposedly for either a D500-1 (2x4bbl) or a KD500-1 (2x4bbl) that has a unique shaft in that rather than a male flat for insertion in the top of the distributor intermediate shaft, instead has the slot (like the intermediate shaft) and so would need to fit into a "male" part on the intermediate shaft inside the driven gear.

I am on pretty good knowledge that this was a setup for the off-road engines only to ensure longevity when racing.

Can you confirm? I can send you the part numbers by PM.

Would this "secret code" used on the 57 build tag also be used in 56 ? If so, what is it ? My tag is kind of crusty at the bottom, but should clean up. Thanks! J.

Alas, 56'ers do not have their D500-status 'imprinted' on the Paint/Trim plate. Gotta get the Factory IBM Card, to prove its provenance/pedigree!!!

Thanks, Neil. I am learning more every day! This is probably known to everyone but me, but how does one go about getting the factory IBM card for their car ?
