There's a new book I seen at Barnes and Nobles titled: "Standard Catalog of 1950's Chrysler" I looked in the book store at this website and didn't see it anywhere. I was reading through the book the other day and it discusses all Chrysler, Dodge, Desoto, Plymouth, and Imperial: Each branch of Chrysler covered in detail by year 1950-1959. I may buy it myself but I'm going to see if I can find it cheaper on Amazon or Ebay. As I said, I looked in the store here and didn't see it. There were some great pics in it and it discussed Virgil Exner. i just thought I'd let you all know about it.

Speaking of books. Have you seen the 'Designing America's Cars: The 50s - from drawing board to driveway' (Publications International, Ltd. 2005)?. It has some nice pictures of the clay design models. All together 320 pages of witch about 60 deal with MoPars.

Frank, I'm not sure why the availability of the Standard Catalog of Chrysler is so spotty right now, my guess is the book is inbetween printings and maybe they are letting the current supply dry up before a new edition comes out. Let's hope at least!

Jan, thanks for the tip on the book, I didn't know about that. I am really excited to see to it's a collaborative effort between the Auto Editors of Consumer Guide and Jeffrey Godshall. I really enjoy the CG series of books quite a bit, Fabulous '50s, Sizzling '60s, etc, but there are a few historical errors. With Godshall onboard I have a strong feeling the accuracy as well as the fun will be present in this book. In fact it was such an irresistible combination, I just ordered a copy. I could only find it at Motorbooks International but I was too excited to do much shopping around.

Thanks for letting us know about it!

Oh cool, I hadn't seen that one either, broken out just for the 1950s... hopefully a 1960s one will not be far behind.

I guess I need to get out from underneath my rock more, huh?

It would be really nice, if they had a book that specifically discussed Forward Look cars. The book could discuss Virgil Exner and how Chrysler sarcastically, mocked Cadillac with the race of the fins, etc. We could call it "Great Cars Lost in a Generation" lol. It would focus on strictly 1955-1962 Mopars. That would be cool!

You're right, it is a surprising that's not been done yet. We know from this site it would be a popular book, if done well. There's so much to cover if I had my wish I'd almost like to see it in volumes, one for each make, and perhaps one for Chrysler Corp in general to include showcars and the other divisions. Oh, and one for the Canadian models too.

Also, yes, it's a shame those cars do steal alot of the spotlight, especially since the '57 Forward Look cars are what inspired so much of the '59 GM cars. And the 1960 Ford. But at least we know which cars are best!

Just wait until you see the book. There are a couple early MoPar studies in there that look surprisingly close to '59 Buick (fins/tailights) and '59 Pontiac (grille). There are also many details that would come to use in early to mid sixties cars (like that '59 DeSoto with stacked headlights). Nice book, Maybe I would have liked to see more of these design scetches / clay models and period pictures of prototypes and less photos of restored cars.
Maybe my eye just has got used to the production models, but I must say that in many cases the alternative side trim plans did look awfull... luckily those were dropped - like for in example that '58 Plymouth...
That four door ht stationwagon, with '57/58 Plymouth front clip, DeSoto bumpers and Dodge passanger car fins is my favorite! Shame that they did not do any of those 4d '57/58 Plymouth retractables

HAHAHAHAHAHA Doc, me too! All I did was check the forums and ended up buying TWO books! It took all the willpower I had left not to also order that 1950s Chrysler Standard Catalog as well but I have a feeling that may not be permanent willpower, ha.

And thanks again for mentioning the design book, Jan! I'm dying to see it, I love that kind of stuff. There are always a few tucked away in those that are so gorgeous it's amazing they didn't get made. I'll be listening and watching for the UPS man like a hawk!

I found (and bought!) the book from BUY.COM for just $15.51, with reasonable shipping. I have found a lot of books there over the past few years, with pricing generally better than Amazon.

Thanks for the heads up, it looks like a great book...

Dave
