im debating on which mufflers to put on my car, 62 newport, 383, open headers, very mild cam, 2.5in dual exhaust/with X pipe . i know with the headers and big dual exhaust the car is going to have a pretty good growl no matter what, but i dont want the car to be annoyingly loud on the out side or in the car. what is a good muffler that will be very quiet, but wont sacrifice performance? (preferably complete free flow, no packing). i was looking into either flow master 70 series, which are the quietest one they make, or the spin tech RV, truck muff, also the quietest they make. any other suggestions?

Summit Turbos are $15 each, sound stockish at idle, and bark well when you get on it. I wouldn't use Spintech. Even though I am a huge fan of them, I don't think they'd be quiet enough for you. "Quiet" and "Performance" don't generally go together all that well. You could also add a pair of resinators after the mufflers, preferably after the axle to quiet it down some more. For referance, "Resinator" is a fancy term for glasspack, and almost all new cars use them.

Keep in mind that the further back the mufflers are, the quieter it will be, and the lower the tone.

In a completelyy different direction, the ner Ram and Jeep Hemi mufflers flow extreamly well and kill sound great. The Ram muffler flows so well, if you replace it with the catback Flowmaster kit, you LOOSE power. The downside is that they are physically quite large. factory mufflers off a Charger or 300C would also work and be quiet. They produce about the same amount of power you will, so you won't really loose anything.

Here's a totally off the wall suggestion. Put some catalytic converters about a foot behind the header collectors. Modern cats, especially those on performance vehicles, like the new Hemi's, or LS1 Camaros flow well enough that they are NOT a restriction to flow, but muffle sound quite well. Old style BB cats sucked, new honeycomb style cats rock as far as flow is concerned.

I had another thought. You could run two mufflers per side, one before the axle, one after the axle, or wherever you have room. If they are free flowing mufflers, you won't really loose much, if anything.

On another note, Flomasters don't really flow all that well. I would assume that a quieter Flowmaster, like the 70 series, would flow even less. I have no data on the Spintechs.

I don't know how well those Flowmasters flow, but I have never liked the way they sound. I think the sound would be particularly out of place on an FL car. But that is purely subjective opinion

My suggestion for mufflers would be Hemi Turbo mufflers by DynoMax (I think I got that right ) I have seen actual tests that show that they flow better than almost all the other gimmicky mufflers for sale out there. They are essentially Turbo mufflers (like the Summit mufflers Bugman recomended) but over-sized and made for trucks/RVs. The only problem would be...would they fit?
You'd have to find the dimensions of the muffler and then crawl under your car with a tape-measure to see if they would fit.
That is what I plan on doing when I get to that stage.

Anyway, Turbo mufflers in general are some of the best mufflers out there...they flow very well, and are quiet untill you get on the gas...You can't beat that combination in my opinion
And Summit sells some of the cheapest (and not necessarily the worst) turbo mufflers you are going to find. The general rule of thumb is to buy the largest turbo mufflers that you can fit under your car and that come with the right pipe diameter for your exhaust.

I have a sneaking suspision that all the "cheap" turbos(Summit, Dynomax, Thrush, etc) are all actually the same muffler in different boxes.

And like Thomas said, the standard Turbo muffler flows remarkably well, especiallu given what they generally cost.

That "cackle" is usually from glasspacks with a small diameter pipe. If you use glasspacks you need to keep the pipe size large to eliminate it. (2 1/4 +) I would go with the summit turbo with a 2 1/2 pipe. I know of a few B engines around with this combo and they sound great. Also run the pipes all the way to the back and the interior noise will be minimal.

I was at a cruise the other week and there was a nice, stock '62-'63 Imperial sedan.

I wound-up following it most of the way home...

I don't know what was on it for an exhaust system, but they were duals, and they were too loud for a stock Imperial, in my most humble opinion...

The sound was not in keeping with the image of a fine luxury barge....

From what I remember of the exhaust pics in my '60 Chrysler shop manual, the NYers and Imperials that had duals also had resonator cans on each side, between the rear-axle and the back bumper...

The sound I would be looking for for my '60 Windsor would be "throaty, but dignified"... and definitely no "Firecrackers" on decel...

While old movies can be deceiving, most 1950s-60s movies that have "Real sound" of the car that's actually in the shot, these cars did not sound as loud when new as they often do when we put present-day exhaust components on them...

When I bought my '55 De Soto Fireflite in 1985, the seller included two NORS mufflers: they were oval (about 8-10" across) and between 3 and 3.5 ft OAL... they were HUGE...and very quiet too ! Don't remember if they had a name on them, but they were painted gold from whatvever company made them.

If you find a good combo for your '62, be sure and let us know what you used...

Good luck !

Remember, as a general rule, smaller diameter has more rap/crackel, larger diameter has less rap/crackel. An H pipe will increase low tones and rumble, an X pipe will increase high tones and rasp

I like the sound out of my Borla's. These are 2-1/2 in, 2-1/4 out, a straight through design made of 304 stainless steel.

Yes, two mufflers per side will be quieter than one. I don't know case sizes off hand, but I bet if you call the Jegs or Summit tech line, they could give them to you.

A classic car needs a classic sound .For now and since I bought my car a few years back I ve just been patching my exaust until I do an engine swap. But with my poly 318 I have run str8 2in pipes out back sounded very cool and was quiet in the ****pit. At the present I have thrush glasspacks and I am very happy w/ tone in front of rear wheel. My opinion only flowmasters make everything sound the same, like a Mustang or Chavy truck. And for an FL to sound like one of them .....well you get the point.Good Luck Charlie

I have flowmasters on my Ramcharger with a 340. It's loud, but doesn't have a good tone.
I have "street hemi" mufflers on my road runner, not as loud, but sounds a lot better.

IF you go into the archives, they talk about stock performance mufflers back in the late 60,s .there is even a napa part no for a stock muffler, which was the manufacturer for the muffler still available.

Hola

My general rule is to have the same size inside diam of the exhaust manifold from there to the rear tip.

I have a 1963 Coach Works Le Baron with a dual snorkled 413, the power steering pump with the fancey spoked large diam pulley and the above exhaust that has a cross over pipe. This exhaust also has the notched HP MoPar mufflers and resonators.

My other big engine jewel is a 1966 Le Baron with the 440. All the same under the car tubing, ex-cept it has the "X".

Both cars are country club quite and when standing at the rear bumper they have the bump, bump, bump, bump of the big MoPar. The 63 was the first car to visit the muffler shop and it sounded to much as a GTX and the likes that I added the long resonators ( aka 1970 300 w/ HP 440 ).

I am getting ready to have a 1962 Imperial Crown Cpe to visit the muffler shop. With this car I am going to use a differant exh manifolds ( http://www.1aauto.com/1A/ExhaustManifolds/Dodge/PickupFullSize/PLP1... ) and the same as the 63 exh tubing.

I am wondering if using a pair of turbo mufflers, then a pair of higher quality glass packs at the rear as resonators would do the trick? 2.5" piping the entire length, of course!!!

My '57 Saratoga needs an entire exhaust system. I am thinking of 2.5" pipes, turbo mufflers and some sort of resonators. Not sure if there is enough clearance under a '57 Chrysler for an "X" pipe.

I am guessing that finding 2.5" resonators is difficult these days. I bought a pair of N.O.S. ones, but am saving those for my Imperial. Oddly enough, '68 Imperials with factory duals did not have resonators, but mine will. Only single exhaust '68 Imperials were built with resonators.

K.

I've got a pair of those large good flowing Dynomax mufflers on my '65 300 convertible with 383 and 2.5" exhaust... they are a too loud for my taste and will be replaced pretty soon.
On my '62 NY stationwagon, I've got a pair of 50-series (3-chambers) FlowMasters on a 2.25" exhaust-system and a 413 under the hood, no crossover-pipes, and I like their sound level. Certainly not too loud at idle, and somewhat performance-like at part and full throttle, but definitly not 'droning' or too loud.

I'm thinking of installing a set of 50series flowmasters on my '65 vert. aswell. I can always install a second resonator-muffler, but I don't think it will be needed.
